When the Maple Leafs made several bold moves at the trade deadline, it was with the playoffs in mind. But it would have been nice to see some of their acquisitions play during the regular season, too. Three of the four players acquired by the Leafs at the deadline were out of the lineup with significant injuries by late March. The latest was defenseman Glen Wesley, who fractured his left foot blocking a shot in a game against Boston March 24. Wesley was out of the lineup indefinitely, but was hoping to be back sometime during the first round of the playoffs. “The only thing I know right now is that it’s broken,” said Wesley the day after the injury. The Leafs were already without Doug Gilmour, who strained ligaments in his…

Sticking with Wings

There have been times over the years when the team The Hockey News chose prior to the start of the season to win the Stanley Cup falls off and causes us to change our mind late in the year. That is not the case this year. The Red Wings were, and still are, our pick. “There are a lot of good teams this year, but I’d have to say Detroit is at the top of the list,” said San Jose center Mike Ricci. “They’ve done it before and they’ve kept most of their guys. They have a great chemistry and they have confidence in one another. No matter what happens, they seem to know how to react.” That said, this is one of the more interesting seasons in recent memory. Most years you can…

Muller’s OT magic

Some guys get the overtime shakes. They can’t feel their stick and drip sweat from a thousand jittery pores. But not Kirk Muller. He’s too busy scoring to be nervous. As one of only three active players with four career OT playoff goals, the 37-year-old vet has a simple explanation for his good fortune. “You look at most overtime goals, they’re not usually the nicest goals,” he says. Perhaps not, but they’ve still put the veteran Dallas forward in some pretty nice company. Muller, Jaromir Jagr and Joe Sakic share third spot on the all-time OT goals list with retired playoff heroes Wayne Gretzky, Dale Hunter, Joe Murphy, Bob Nystrom, Stephane Richer and Esa Tikkanen. The only players with more OT markers are Glenn Anderson, with five, and the immortal Maurice ‘Rocket’ Richard…
