Parity the silver lining in long-range forecast

The Hockey News FROM THE EDITORS A funny thing happened on the way to financial Armageddon. Parity broke out. Gamache’s numbers measuring up

The numbers on center Simon Gamache are staggering. Well, almost every number. He led the Quebec League in goals (74), assists (110) and points (184) in 2001-02, then scored at an even more frequent pace in the playoffs, piling up league highs in goals (22), assists (35) and points (57) in only 21 games. Last spring, he terrorized the East CoastLeague during the playoffs, leading the league in goals (15) and points (24) during the Greenville Grrrowl’s 17-game march to the Riley Cup. Yet there remains baffling numbers on his bio: drafted 290th overall by Atlanta in 2000. Everyone thought he was too small at 5-foot-9,185 pounds. Gee, can you be too small when all you do is score at crunch time? “It has been that way my whole life,” said Gamache, a second-year pro…

Coach has vision of Flames future

Darryl Sutter has a plan in place. Now it’s up to the players to throw a wrench in it. As the season winds down, the seventh straight without a playoff berth, the Flames coach has an idea of who can turn things around. That doesn’t mean a strong finish by anyone on the bubble can’t change his mind. “There’s a few young guys that haven’t confirmed to me, on a consistent basis, that they can help us win,” Sutter said. “Once in a while they’re a first star, but there’s two or three games where they’re invisible.” Sutter believes building blocks are in place with Jarome Iginla, Chris Drury and Robyn Regehr. He wants those fighting for spots on the bottom two lines or as the sixth and seventh defensemen to step up their game. The…
