Former NHLer Ron Duguay won two of his first three games behind the bench of the Atlantic Coast League Jacksonville Barracudas. Duguay, 45, replaced Kurt Wickenehiser, who resigned with the team mired in last place. Duguay scored a goal and four points in six games with Jack-sonville this season, but retired to concentrate on coaching. He said it wasn’t a difficult decision. “No matter what level you’re playing, you have to be in great shape and I wasn’t,” said Duguay, who made his NHL debut with the New York Rangers in 1977.…

Gelinas maintains positive view despite Flames’ sub-par season

Martin Gelinas’ performance with the Flames this year has mirrored that of the team. After a decent beginning, he has slipped significantly. A month into the season, Gelinas was scoring at nearly a point-a-game pace (13 points in his first 14 contests), which had him on the edge of the NHL’s top 25 scorers. In fact, back on Nov. 7 he was tied with Joe Thornton, Bill Guerin, Sergei Fedorov and Vince Lecavalier. But since then his numbers have fallen off and he has been playing mainly on a checking unit. Still, Gelinas believes the Flames are not that far away from turning the comer. “It’s one goal, one break,” he said. “A lot of time, it boils down to older guys in the room, sitting back and saying: ‘Let’s keep going and…

Three standouts vying for award

As the College Hockey America regular season entered its final weeks, a trio of players stood out as serious candidates for player of the year. Niagara junior forward Joe Tallari tops the list among skaters. He is the CHA’s top scorer with 23 goals and 44 points overall through 28 games. He’s also solid defensively, his play warranting a mid-season promotion to alternate captain. Air Force senior Andy Berg is second in goals (20) and points (37) through 32 games - quite an accomplishment on a Falcons team that struggles to score. While Alabama-Hunstville has several veterans who should earn all-CHA honors, freshman goalie Scott Munroe has the best chance among the Chargers to win player of the year. Even though Munroe has split time with senior Mark Byrne, the rookie holds a.…
