McCarty wants deal, but won’t miss camp
Mac will be back for training camp. Detroit right winger Darren McCarty, a 30-year-old restricted free agent, has been seeking a long-term deal, but won’t sit out for one. GM Ken Holland said he and McCarty’s agent, Pat Morris, had an agreement: if they can’t reach a long-term pact before camp, McCarty will sign a one-year deal for the Wings’ qualifying offer of $1.95 million. That would make McCarty eligible for unrestricted free agency next summer. ROOKIE TO WATCH The Wings hope left winger Henrik Zetterberg can make as big an impact as Pavel Datsyuk did last season. Zetterberg, who will turn 22 Oct. 10, showed he could play at a high level at the 2002 Olympics. He also won the Golden Puck as Sweden’s top player in the Elite League last…
Turgeon set free from campaign of woe
Sometimes he looked like a checker, sometimes an out-of-place left winger, sometimes simply a lost soul. Seldom did Pierre Turgeon look like the commonly held image of Pierre Turgeon, gifted playmaker and world-class center. More than just the uniform changed when Turgeon moved from St. Louis to Dallas before the beginning of last season. And that’s why his second season as a Star is also a second chance, a mulligan after his tee shot became a duck hook into the Rio Grande. The stakes are high. Again, owner Tom Hicks opened his wallet for free agents to fill holes. After missing the playoffs, the Stars are talking - with a straight face - about trying to win two Stanley Cups by 2004. With Bill Guerin playing with Mike Modano and (maybe) Jason Arnott, the Stars…
UNITED LEAGUE
Martin Woods, the United League’s best defenseman last season, has left the Flint Generals to sign a contract with Lada Togliatti of the Russian League. Woods, 27, tied for fifth in the UHL scoring race last season while setting club records for goals (27), assists (68) and points (95) by a defenseman. The Generals hope the signing of rookie defenseman Jean-Luc Legault, 20, will offset the loss of Woods. Legault had 39 goals and 84 assists for the St-Jerome Panthers of the Quebec AAA Jr. League last season. Flint also signed right winger Ashlee Langdone, who led the West Coast League with 30 majors and 514 penalty minutes last season. Langdone, 22, has 881 minutes in 117 career games during two pro seasons with San Diego in the WCHL.…
Americans audition female netminder
Shannon Szabados made news from the moment she arrived at the Tri-City Americans’ training camp. Szabados, a 16-year-old goaltender, became the first female to try out for a Western League team. Not only that, she participated in the pre-season opener - a 6-5 overtime loss to the Vancouver Giants Sept. 4. “She played fantastic,” said assistant coach Jim Hiller after Szabados stopped 16 of 18 shots in 32:45 of action. Szabados was among three rookies vying for the backup position behind Tyler Weiman, 18. “When I came here, I didn’t expect to make it this far,” Szabados said. “This has been awesome so far.” Szabados was surprised by the attention she has received. “It definitely is overwhelming,” she said. “There’s lots of media and attention. I like it, but the way I see it, I’m like any…
