Puckstopper trades pads for pulpit
When observers look at the recent post-season woes of the Philadelphia Flyers, the carousel of struggling goaltenders has frequently been identified as a significant part of the problem. Indeed, with goalies such as Ron Hextall, John Vanbiesbrouk, Brian Boucher and Roman Cechmanek all putting up wildly inconsistent performances, Flyer fans could be forgiven for praying to a higher power for help. Journeyman Slaney finally at home
By himself, John Slaney may have helped keep Rand McNally in business. In his first nine pro seasons, Slaney played home games in 12 different cities. Got a road atlas? Baltimore, Washington, Portland, Colorado, Cornwall, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Nashville, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. “My wife (Brenda) and I liked it, we got to meet new people and see new cities,” Slaney said. “But we had a son (Tyler) three months ago, so you want to settle down.” The Slaneys are settling down in Philadelphia, in large part because the Phantoms (American League) and Flyers weren’t about to let the two-time AHL defenseman-of-the-year get away.
