WEST COAST LEAGUE
The owners of the Tacoma Sabercats have signaled that the team will fold after the playoffs. CoachSports of California, which also operates the Long Beach Ice Dogs, purchased the Sabercats from Canadian businessman Bruce Taylor last spring. The new ownership tried to negotiate a new lease with the Tacoma Dome while playing through the final season of a five-year contract. However, attendance fell to the bottom of the league: 2,854 per game. With no other Western city offering an appealing combination of market and arena, CoachSports likely will let the team go dark rather than move it. The Sabercats were born in 1997. They advanced to the league final in their first three seasons and won the Taylor Cup in 1999.…
Forsberg needed time off
I am tired of hearing people complain that Peter Forsberg turned his back on his team this season. Ever since I watched Forsberg score the winning goal for Sweden in the 1994 Olympics, I knew he was destined for NHL stardom. However, those of us who have watched him over the years with Colorado have noticed some of the spark in his eyes fading year after year. It’s not that he has lost his desire for hockey; maybe just for the NHL game. Night after night, Forsberg got slashed, cross-checked, tripped, punched or whatever it took to slow him down. Sophomore season sees Sedins progress at different speeds
They are still “The Twins”, but Daniel and Henrik Sedin are no longer being lumped together when people discuss their on-ice accomplishments. Henrik, the center, has been enjoying a fine season and had 15 goals and 33 points - both career highs - with five games remaining in his second NHL campaign. Known more for his playmaking skills, Henrik had not hit the 15-goal mark in five professional seasons, including three in the Swedish Elite League. Daniel, the left winger, is another matter. After back surgery last May, he has not been the same player who netted 20 goals in his rookie NHL season. Daniel was stuck on nine goals with a week remaining in the season and many feel his struggles have actually dragged down linemate Henrik. Canuck coach Marc Crawford…
