Style change helps Big Red defender have impact at both ends of the ice
Doug Murray’s raging bull days are over. After spending his first two seasons at Cornell punishing opponents with his physical style of play, Murray is killing them with finesse this season. The 6-foot-3,220-pound junior defenseman is still one of the toughest players in the Eastern College Athletic Conference, but this year he has picked his spots. “He’s starting to understand he doesn’t have to hit everything,” said Cornell coach Mike Shafer. “He realizes with all the hitting he does, he wears himself down, too. But he’s still a very intimidating player.” Despite his rugged style,’Murray is usually able to stay out of the penalty box. He had just 38 penalty minutes in 32 games as a freshman and spent only 39 minutes in the penalty box in 25 games last season. Murray, selected by San…
Skudra just happy to be part of NHL
Peter Skudra has answered the dogging question of who was going to play backup goaltender for the Vancouver Canucks. In his first two starts for Vancouver, Skudra recorded a win and a tie while allowing four goals on 58 shots for a.931 save percentage. This is a far cry from the 0-3-0 performance of his short-lived predecessor Martin Brochu, who departed with a.856 save percentage and 4.17 goals-against average. “I hope I can settle in Vancouver,” Skudra said. “I love it here in North America. I’m excited about my life.” The Canucks were interested in Skudra during the summer but the netminder opted to sign a tryout contract with the New York Rangers, never figuring the Blueshirts would go with 18-year-old Dan Blackburn as Mike Richter’s backup. The Canucks are Skudra’s 14th pro…
Bourque offers voice of wisdom
Ray Bourque’s leadership was a key ingredient in Colorado’s Stanley Cup championship last season. He retired last summer, but the future Hall of Fame defenseman returned to Denver to have his jersey retired by the Avalanche Nov. 24 and had words of encouragement for his sluggish team. Colorado has struggled to score and win this season. The Avalanche was.500 (12-12-1-0) and chasing three teams in the Northwest Division “You look at a lot of teams that win the Cup, I haven’t seen too many get off to great starts,” Bourque said. “I don’t think they’ve played many home games (15 of Colorado’s first 25 were on the road). It’s a matter of not being able to score. “They’ve been playing good defense and (goalie) Patrick (Roy) has been playing great. They’ll turn it around…
