Richter whitewash long overdue feat
The streak was almost unthinkable. The New York Rangers had gone 213 games, since Feb. 26, 1999, without a shutout in this era when shutouts are a dime a dozen. That ended, mercifully, when goalie Mike Richter beat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-0 on Nov. 29, ending his personal streak of 143 games without a shutout. “To be honest,” Richter said,”I didn’t know (how long) it was. I just knew it was a helluva long time.” Of course, much of the Rangers’ streak had to do with Richter’s two major knee injuries the last two seasons. And the wrist he broke in mid-November is better although it still aches on occasion. Although he has missed just five games, Deadmarsh has had a season’s worth of trouble. He was sidelined all of camp after undergoing surgery last summer to repair a ligament in his left wrist. Then he developed groin problems after trying to come back too soon. Deadmarsh first was struck in the ribs Oct. 2 in Carolina. When…
More NHL players seeing the light
NHL visor use is trending up-a welcome sight for too many sore eyes. A survey by The Hockey News has found 182 players on NHL rosters through Nov. 30 are wearing visors this season-about 28 per cent of all non-goalies. Last year the number was 24 per cent; in 1999-2000 it was 21 per cent. Colorado and Montreal each have a league-high 10 players wearing facial protection. Below is the number of visored players on each team in 19992000 and 2001-02. Team-by-Team Visor Count…
