Hatcher, Matvichuk struggle on blueline

For Dallas Stars’ captain Derian Hatcher and his defense partner Richard Matvichuk, explaining the results so far this season is easier than finding the cause. The duo, assigned to shut down the opposition’s top line, and the one whose body checks set the trend that defined Dallas’ playoff success, is struggling. Hatcher was minus-9; Matvichuk checked in at a team-worst minus-10. “We’re at the point right now where it feels like no matter what we do, it’s going in the net,” Hatcher said. Hatcher’s play, in particular, has drawn scrutiny. At 6-foot-5 and 235 pounds, he’s one of a handful of defensemen in the NHL who can dominate a game physically. Cheel Arena benefactor, 97, on hand as Clarkson wins for biggest crowd ever

Playing in front of a record crowd that included the benefactor of Cheel Arena, Clarkson and St. Lawrence added another memorable chapter to their storied rivalry on Nov. 3. The real hero…

A I can only tell you that when something like this occurs, you spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about how much good luck and good friends play into the equation. It doesn’t seem so long ago I showed up for my first hockey-writing gig, a conference to introduce the 1978 Calgary Canucks of the Alberta Junior League. The owner was former Red Wings’ star Doug Barkley, the coach, a 24-year-old named Russ Farwell, who went on to become, among other…
