NHL TEAM REPORTS

Sharks believe they can contend

The Sharks march confidently into the new season fresh off a franchise-best 95-point campaign, the fifth straight year in which San Jose improved over the previous season. Adding an anticipated full season from sniper Teemu Selanne and the Sharks are squarely setting their sights on joining the elite in the West. Five things you should know about the Sharks: 1. Pieces in place for better power play. The Sharks ranked 24th last year and had the lowest success rate (14 per cent) among playoff qualifiers and didn’t manage a power play goal in 22 chances during the post-season. Employing Owen Nolan, Vincent Damphousse, Gary Suter and Selanne on the ice at the same time for the first time should mean more success. 2. Evgeni Nabokov still has something to prove. He burst on…

Dogs days over

The Mississauga IceDogs’ 25-game losing streak and 34-game winless streak are over. And the Dogs did it in style, pounding the visiting Peterborough Petes 9-1 Sept. 21. “This is the first time this team has been involved in a 9-1 win; usually, it’s the other way around,” said IceDogs’ co-owner and coach Don Cherry. It was only the 17th win in franchise history for the IceDogs as they enter their fourth season. They’re 1-1-0 this year. It must have done Cherry’s heart proud to see his two European picks score the game’s first two goals - Russian Igor Radulov and Ukranian Alexander Skorohod. “They’re phenomenal players and we’re lucky to have them,” said Cherry of his two Euros. In the past, Cherry didn’t allow Europeans on the team, saying they took spots from Canadian…

FROM THE MIHHESOTA WILD LOCKER ROOM:

Hockey players are creatures of habit. They get to a visiting rink, change into their underwear and paddle into the hallway to grab a blow-torch. There’s always a stick to be fiddled with. That’s changing, however. If you’re using one of those new one-piece graphite Synergy sticks, they pretty much come as they are, right out of the box. “You cant put any heat to graphite”, said Minnesota Wild equipment manager Tony Da Costa. “You can file the bottom of the blade a little bit but you can’t change the curve.” The one-piece graphite models that Easton puts out are still pretty rare on stick racks. There’s only so many models out there--Joe Sakic, Steve Yzerman, Brendan Shanahan, Mike Modano. If you’re not a superstar, you can try one of their…

A season of firsts lie ahead for Cats

This is the first full season with Florida Panthers’ ownership not directly involving H. Wayne Huizenga. It’s also the first season that begins with Duane Sutter as an NHL coach…that’ll see Pavel and Valeri Bure on the same team…for Swedish super scorer Kristian Huselius and Finnish grinder Niklas Hagman. So many uncertainties bring an aura of excitement, whether through anticipation or trepidation. This is a wild-card team and would fit that designation even if the NHL had the NFL or Major League Baseball’s playoff format. The odds against them winning the division are long, but if a few things work out, they can sneak in the playoffs as a lower seed. Or, their Titanic could sink quickly again. Five things you need to know about the Panthers: 1. Pavel Bure, the Soloist, is no…
