Waiting to sign on dotted line
The NHL is used to stars missing in action when the season opens due to contract disputes, but if you thought there were fewer big names unsigned this season, you’re correct. Last year at the same time there was a significantly higher number, among them: Jason Arnott, Anson Carter, Sergei Gonchar, Nikolai Khabibulin, Eric Lindros, Derek. Morris, Scott Niedermayer, Michael Peca, Sergei Samsonov, Ryan Smyth and Joe Thornton. Here are the significant free agents who had not signed a contract as of Sept. 21.…
Canada, U.S. make leadership mistakes
My biggest concern with Team Canada is Pat Quinn as the coach. Unless they play the Ottawa Senators for the gold, there’s no reason to believe Canada will win. Why weren’t Larry Robinson or Bob Hartley given the job? David McKnight,Belwood, Ont. While Brian Leetch has captained the U.S. to a World Cup win, Chris Chelios was in charge when Team USA disgraced itself at Nagano. So why is he the captain again? The U.S. needs the class of Leetch on and off the ice. Jim Fix,Centreville, Va. Vancouver should obtain Detroit’s Chris Osgood. The Canucks are in need of a No. 1 and Osgood could teach Dan Cloutier for a few seasons, then go somewhere else. Keep your stick on the ice, go to the net and one of the most gifted passers and unselfish players in the NHL will put you on the scoresheet. Ryan Smyth knows this better than most. He flanked Doug Weight’s left side for the better part of five seasons with the Edmonton Oilers and piled up 131 goals. “Doug helped me a tremendous amount,” said the 25-year-old winger. “I’m not saying I didn’t create my own chances by going to the net and stuff, but if the puck’s right there on your tape…he was a tremendous player to play with.” Weight is a St. Louis Blue now, so Smyth will have to go it without Weight’s…
