NHL TEAM REPORTS

Bednar below par in Kings’ workouts

The scouting report on Jaroslav Bednar was impressive. It just wasn’t dead-on. It said Bednar, the Kings’ fourth pick (51st overall) in the June draft, is a great skater who can take the hits in front of the net. But for the second straight year, it appears the Kings did not quite get the player advertised. At 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds, the Czech-born Bednar can take the hits. But as training camp progressed, Bednar seemed more content circling the ice waiting for a pass than digging for loose pucks in the corners, the way coach Andy Murray likes. “We were told he would be one of our top six forwards,” Murray said. “He may eventually become a top-six forward, but that first might mean spending some time in Manchester (of the American League).” Last…

Colorado GM Pierre Lacroix, a veteran of blockbuster trades, is confident his team has the depth to withstand Peter Forsberg’s absence and isn’t looking to make a deal for a replacement. “I think this team has proven in the past…if you look at the last playoff, this team has gotten together and accomplished what they needed to accomplish,” Lacroix said. “We’re not going to do anything to jeopardize or show Peter we’ve lost our hope. Our hope is he’s going to heal his body and feel better about everything and come back. In his first NHL training camp, Dan Hamhuis has made a strong first impression, if not a lasting one. The first defenseman ever selected by Nashville in the first round (12th overall) was returned to Prince George of the Western League, two days after he appeared in the team’s pre-season opener. He was the only Predators’ blueliner in the lineup that night who had no NHL experience. Nashville lost the game 4-3 to Atlanta, but Hamhuis already had established himself as a top-notch prospect with his performance in training camp scrimmages and the Traverse City (Mich.) Prospects Tournament. “He’s going to have to get bigger and stronger, (but) a lot of guys come in who are raw talents, are bigger and stronger but don’t have (his) instincts,” said coach Barry Trotz. A year ago…
