There’s no place like Munn for six Spartan seniors
Michigan State had already clinched its third Central Collegiate Hockey Association regular season title in four years, but its final scheduled game on March 1 was still significant. Not only was it at East Lansing’s Munn Ice Arena against arch-rival Michigan, it was the final home and regular season game for the Spartans’ six seniors. Prior to MSU’s 3-1 win, Andrew Bogle, Sean Patchell, John Nail, Joe Blackburn, Damon Whitten and captain Rustyn Dolyny all were honored. “It was awesome,” said Whitten. “I was a little worried about how I’d play, with the emotion of the night. But it was fun to celebrate, to make the lap (around the ice). I’ll never forget this night the rest of my life.” ANALYSIS Miami made a case for quiet efficiency and consistency by climbing into…

Daze comes to life after slow start
In the case of Chicago Blackhawks’ GM Mike Smith, perhaps his best move of the season was the trade he didn’t make. Smith resisted dealing Eric Daze even after the veteran left winger asked to be traded in late October. Now Daze is in the midst of his best season ever and was on pace to top his career-high 31 goals (1997-98). When Daze scored in a 4-1 win at Dallas March 7, it gave him 29 goals and was his 14th goal in 14 games. First-year Hawks’ coach Alpo Suhonen didn’t know a lot about Daze before the season, but had heard about his tendency to be a streaky scorer. “If he would play one season through like the last month he would be one of the scoring leaders in the league,” Suhonen…

Sharks screw up with deal
Finally, Anaheim GM Pierre Gauthier traded Teemu Selanne and his huge salary. No wonder the Mighty Ducks have been awful this season-they spent nearly $20 million on two players, Paul Kariya and Selanne. Meanwhile, the “dynamic duo” has been anything but. Selanne had not been a very mighty Duck this season and Kariya has been inconsistent (and injured). The Sharks think they’re getting a dangerous sniper in Selanne, but by trading young gun Jeff Friesen, they may have shot themselves in the foot. Luc Villeneuve, Aylmer, Que. Good luck to Theoren My heart sank when I heard Theoren Fleury had entered a substance abuse program. I was very heartened, however, that he made the decision himself, rather than being forced into rehabilitation. My prayers go out not only to Fleury and his family, but to the…
