Shulmistra Wolves’ ace in the goal

You’ll have to pardon Richard Shulmistra if he’s reluctant to unpack-the goalie has been living out of his suitcase all year. Seemingly unwanted by the Florida Panthers, he had stops in Kentucky of the American League and Kansas City of the International League, before the desperate Chicago Wolves called in early January. That call came after Rick DiPietro, the first pick in the 2000 NHL draft, became unavailable due to the World Junior Championship and a recall by the New York Islanders. Shulmistra’s arrival in Chicago signaled the beginning of the Wolves’ run from deep in the basement of the Western Conference. Posting a 13-5-0 record in 19 games, he brought the defending Turner Cup champions within striking distance of a playoff spot. “My college coach, George Gwozdecky from Thunder Bay, told me to…

For the record, Labbe wants no party

He wants no pre-game ceremony honoring his accomplishment. He definitely wants no banner unfurled with his name and the number 172 on it. He’s not even sure whether the American League needs to update its record book. With J.F. Labbe about to set the modern-day record for most wins by an AHL goaltender, the eight-year veteran said there really was no reason to celebrate. That’s because the record of 171 held by Peter Sidorkiewicz encompasses only the past 29 sea-sons. The league’s statistical bookkeeping is incomplete for the AHL’s first 36 seasons. “It’s like if Patrick Roy had the record for the last 25 years. I’d like to see the league find out what the real record is. I’d like to see if in the ‘50s and ‘60s and before, that there were…

NHL TEAM REPORTS

Osgood hits rough slide, but not panic button

After playing some spectacular hockey during an 8-0-2 streak, Detroit Red Wings’ goaltender Chris Osgood allowed nine goals on 31 shots and was pulled twice in two starts. “It just seems like the puck’s not bouncing for him,” said associate coach Barry Smith. “That’s how it goes. We’ve had a pretty good string of it. Some nights you just run out of whatever you had going.” Osgood endured the worst slump of his career early this season. He said he had lost confidence in himself. Asked if his latest stumbles resembled his earlier ones, he said: “No. Not at all. Don’t exaggerate things. “Every time something happens, it gets exaggerated. We’ve been playing so well lately and things have been going good for me, too. I mean, something was bound to happen sooner…

NHL TEAM REPORTS

Pellerin happy to go where needed

Scott Pellerin says he’ll do whatever it takes to fit in with the Carolina Hurricanes. Pellerin, a left winger who was traded to Carolina March 1, was used in a variety of roles during his first few games with Carolina. He was part of several line combinations. “I can be plugged into certain roles,” Pellerin said. “That’s something I take pride in. It’s been something I’ve worked at.” The Hurricanes acquired Pellerin to try to bolster a sluggish offense that had become stale beyond the top two lines. Coach Paul Maurice was hoping Pellerin, playing on a line with right winger Rob DiMaio and center Josef Vasicek, would generate some additional production. Pellerin said he understands the urgency to make line changes. “You have to find the right chemistry,” he said. ANALYSIS The Hurricanes made left…
