If you tagged along with Jiri Fischer during the summer, or at least tried to, you’d wonder if he was training for the hockey season or the Tour de France. Each day, the Detroit Red Wings’ defensive star-of-the-future endured a three-hour workout. And three times a week, for up to two hours, he and a group of friends biked cross-country along the winding roads of the Czech Republic. There’s a danger in second-guessing the selection process of a team before a single player has even been named. If the team wins, you risk looking like an idiot. I’ll chance it. So why the hell was Scotty Bowman not named coach of Canada’s 2002 Olympic team? That’s Scotty Bowman, the dean of NHL coaches, the guy who has guided eight teams to the Stanley Cup and was director of player personnel with Pittsburgh for another championship. The guy who has more NHL coaching wins-1,179 and counting through Feb. 21, plus another 205 in the playoffs - than anybody who ever stood behind a bench.
