Confidence soars for revived Osgood

Not only has goaltender Chris Osgood put his first-half slump behind him, he’s playing like a star for the Detroit Red Wings. His record is better than .500. His goals-against average is below 3.00. His teammates are playing confidently in front of him and he’s out of the net, cutting off angles, daring shooters to make his day. “Sometimes you have to cheat a bit,” Osgood said. “A lot of it is anticipation. Before, I wasn’t really doing that because I wasn’t confident. I was waiting for things to happen, waiting for the puck to come to me. Now I more or less feel like I’m dictating what I’m doing and when the puck comes to me, I’m there before the guy shoots it.” The slump is a fading memory. “The only thing I…

Legend Parker marks 1,000th game as Boston University’s bench boss

Boston University coach Jack Parker added another milestone to his resume Feb. 23 when his Terriers faced nemesis Northeastern. It was Parker’s l,000th game behind the BU bench. “That’s a long time,” said the 55-year-old Parker, who is in his 28th season at his alma mater. “When I took the job, I told Jack Kelley, my former coach, I wouldn’t be here (as long as) 10 years like he was. Lo and behold, it’s 28 years and counting. “I enjoy the people, the players, the competition, the other coaches and the atmosphere more than anything else. Every basketball coach who has been here has been surprised at how close-knit our coaching community is in hockey.” Parker, who took a career record of 628-310-61 into the Northeastern game, has led BU to two national…

Sullivan’s contract impacts Audette

After being fairly close to reaching an agreement on a new deal with Donald Audette, chances increased dramatically the Atlanta Thrashers’leading scorer would be traded before the March 13 deadline. The reason had less to dowith anything Audette did on the ice than what Chicago’s Steve Sullivan did off of it. The Blackhawks center signed a three-year, $9-million contract extension, which was higher than the approximate $8.25 million Audette had been seeking for the first three years of a proposal that included a $3-million option. Audette already had a career-high 66 points through 55 games and, with 29 goals, was two short of his single-season high. Audette’s agent, Gilles Lupien, said, “One guy signs at $3 million and the player (Audette) wants to be close to that, which is normal, to a…

Smith out as GM; Fletcher takes over

If Wayne Gretzky hadn’t fired him, Bobby Smith said he probably would have resigned as GM of the Phoenix Coyotes anyway. There were already too many cooks in the front-office kitchen. “I’m a firm believer that one guy has to run a hockey team.” Smith said. Gretzky, the team’s new part-owner in charge of all hockey decisions, replaced Smith with Cliff Fletcher Feb. 17, just two days after he and Steve Ellman assumed control of the franchise. Smith had one year remaining on his contract, at about $800,000. “Bobby’s a classy person and he did a very commendable job in a tough situation under some tough circumstances,” Gretzky said. Under Smith’s five-year watch, the Coyotes went 168-136-47-6. “My biggest regret,” Smith said, “is the team’s lack of success in the playoffs. Five times in the…
