NHL TEAM REPORTS

Vets left on defense facing heavy workload

Mario Lemieux’s cranky back was the Pittsburgh Penguins’ most alarming injury, but it wasn’t the only one. The team lost four defensemen and winger Rene Corbet in a matter of days, forcing the recall of three players from the minors. Ian Moran is out for eight weeks - or the balance of the regular season - with a broken left thumb. Jeff Norton (bruised back), Hans Jonsson (strained shoulder) and Marc Bergevin (strained knee) were out indefinitely. The only veteran defensemen available were “Bob Boughner, Darius Kasparaitis and JanneLaukkanen. Recalled from Wilkes-Barre were Andrew Ference, Josef Melichar and Sven Butenschon. “We need to fill the holes and play smart and simple and don’t get yourself too tired,” Boughner said. Corbet likely is out for the rest of the regular season with a broken foot sustained against…

Cancer survivor Roy shocked by taunts

Jonathan Roy thought he’d heard everything until a Feb. 16 game against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. Three months after returning from a battle with testicular cancer, the Moncton Wildcats’ center said he was taunted throughout the game by Titan center Yann Joseph. Roy, 20, claimed Joseph mocked him several times because he has just one testicle. The low point, Roy said, was when Joseph, 20, removed his glove and raised a finger in the air while grabbing his crotch with the other hand. “I was in shock,” Roy said. “I couldn’t believe another human being could say those kinds of things. He doesn’t know what I went through.” Roy claimed Joseph had suggested the only reason Roy made the all-star team was that the league felt sorry for him. Roy underwent surgery and four months…

Captain’s speech rallies troops

It wasn’t exactly an EF Hutton commercial, but when Doug Weight spoke, Oilers listened. The captain had seen enough after Edmonton managed just one win in six games after theall-star break and lost back-to-back games to Anaheim and the Islanders. So Weight called an impromptu meeting on the ice before practice Feb. 19 and lit into the team about complacency and accountability. He followed that up with a two-goal performance the following night in a 5-0 win over Los Angeles. As for the speech, Weight said he was simply “disgusted” with the way the club had been playing. “A lot of other guys on this team were disgusted, too,” he said. “I started it. But it wasn’t just me. Everybody chipped in. I talked about what it feels like to miss the playoffs and working…

Clarke still willing to listen to Leafs

Just because Bob Clarke and Pat Quinn launched a series of verbal ballistic missiles at each other doesn’t necessarily mean an Eric Lindros-to-Toronto trade is destroyed. In fact, a day after the Philadelphia and Leafs’ bosses initiated their guided strikes, Clarke claimed he was still willing to listen, provided Toronto revised its offer. “Sure,” Clarke said. “If we got what we thought was going to help our club, it wouldn’t take long.” Clarke acknowledged the Flyers didn’t go through with the initial proposed trade because of long-term health concerns over defenseman Danny Markov’s injured back. The day the deal fell apart, Clarke disclosed the Flyers were demanding defenseman Tomas Kaberle instead. A deal that included Kaberle would appear to still be on the table, at least until the March 13 trade deadline. Clarke also said several…
