Murphy facing uncertain future

If Joe Murphy isn’t in the Washington Capitals’ lineup after sustaining cuts to his face and neck in a barroom skirmish. it won’t be because of medical reasons. The 15-year NHL veteran was placed on waivers Dec. 8, one day after getting cut in a Manhattan nightclub. Murphy was involved in an incident with another man shortly before 5 a.m. Dec. 7, according to New York City police. The other man was reportedly upset his girlfriend was conversing with Murphy. The player was treated and released from hospital. The cuts to Murphy weren’t serious enough to keep him out of the lineup. Police said the woman’s boyfriend was arrested. He’s no Iron Mike, Grier gone a month

Call it a pre-Christmas blowout of which the Edmonton Oilers wanted no part. The team will have to make due without a potential 20-goal scorer in right winger Mike Grier, out until at least after Christmas with a dislocated right shoulder. The Oilers’ best forward over the previous two weeks, Grier injured the shoulder when he missed San Jose captain Owen Nolan with a check and smacked the shoulder on the stanchion connecting the glass. A painful yell could be heard from the press box as the burly right winger skated directly off the ice holding his shoulder in place. He had dislocated the same shoulder 10 years ago while playing high school hockey. Grier had nine goals in 29 games, including five in the previous five games. Besides scoring, Grier is a respected…

It was a typically cold winter’s day in Pittsburgh as the citizens trudged off to work. They were oblivious to the pending maelstrom, sort of like Eric Lindros skating through the neutral zone against the New Jersey Devils. Nobody saw this one coming. Before the office coffee pots were drained, USA Today posted the news on its web site Dec. 7. Pittsburgh radio stations quickly snagged it and the following two words blasted the city — not to mention the continent — like a Scott Stevens bodycheck: Mario’s back! In the spirit of the season, the r Penguins’ box office phones lit up like a Christmas tree. TV news teams abandoned their stories and headed to the team’s practice facility. Both daily newspapers kicked the presidential fiasco to the side of Page…

A freak injury has claimed the life of a 12-year-old youth hockey player in Springfield, Mass. Quinn Connally was struck in the back of the neck with a puck during a practice Dec. 5 and died 18 hours later in hospital. The puck hit the boy in the open space below the helmet and above the shoulder protection, injuring the brain stem. The seventh grade student was a week from his 13th birthday Paul Chojnowski, the boy’s uncle, said the family decided to donate Quinn’s organs for transplant. Within hours of his death, the boy’s heart was implanted into a 30-year-old man in the southeastern part of the U.S. Other organs harvested include Connally’s kidneys, corneas, liver and pancreas. “Thanks to my nephew, someone has a new heart,” Chojnowski said. “It’s absolutely extraordinary.” Dr.…
