Bulldogs’ boss Sandelin patient with young team
When Scott Sandelin was interviewing for the coaching vacancy at Minnesota-Duluth last spring, he resisted the urge to delve too deeply into the backgrounds and statistics of the Bulldogs’ players. “I didn’t bother looking at stuff like stats,” Sandelin said, “because sometimes you can get misled.” Sandelin knew offense would be a concern as the club that finished 15-22-0 last season lost its top two goal-scorers in Jeff Scissons and Colin Anderson. Ditto for goaltending because ironman Brant Nicklin was gone, too. So when Sandelin, a former North Dakota assistant, took the position, he reserved judgment on his players until the Western Collegiate Hockey Association season began. “Until you play games,” Sandelin said, “you don’t know what kind of character you have.” Minnesota-Duluth lost 10 of its first 12 contests, but Sandelin is convinced his…

Predators taking precautions after Hartnell suffers concussion
With their short, but already crowded history of concussions, the Nashville Predators have kept a careful eye on rookie right winger Scott Hartnell. Hartnell was carried from the ice on a stretcher Nov. 26 after being leveled by Carolina’s Darren Langdon. Hartnell was kept off the ice on the advice of the team’s medical staff in the days following the hit, but he was scheduled to make the team’s West Coast trip which began Dec. 4. “I remember going out for the shift and I remember getting carried off on the stretcher, but just nothing around the hit,” Hartnell said. “It’s a little scary when you look back and can’t remember things, but I feel fine now and that’s the important thing.” Hartnell lost consciousness after the hit and he was taken to…

Brashear charged with off-ice assault
Just as the ugly Marty McSorley-Donald Brashear incident was fading from the public’s radar, Brashear found himself in the headlines again. The Vancouver Canucks’ left winger was charged with assault after a Nov. 27 incident in which a security guard told Brashear’s wife to leave the weight room of the couple’s town home complex because she had her baby with her. The complainant alleged he was grabbed by the throat, but a police spokesperson said no punches were thrown and there were no serious injuries. The weight room’s security video tape was seized by police. Brashear, 28, was not arrested, but issued a summons to appear in court Jan. 2. “I knew that I was not allowed to hit him,” Brashear said. “But I didn’t know that just to [grab] him by the throat,…

Anson dancin’ now after sluggish start
When he first arrived in Edmonton, nobody expected Anson Carter to jump in next to Doug Weight and Ryan Smyth and pick up Bill Guerin’s torrid scoring pace. But nobody expected the hottest line in hockey would turn colder than Christmas in Winnipeg, either. But when Carter and the first line went scoreless and minus three in 11 periods after the trade, the grumbling began. However, it didn’t last long. Carter notched the game-tying assist and the game-winning goal late in the third period of a 5-3 win in Ottawa Nov. 23. He then scored two goals, including the game-winner, and an assist in a 3-2 triumph over Anaheim Nov. 25. “I’m feeling a little more comfortable with the system and the players,” he said. “But I’m still ways away. I figure in about a month…
