Streaky Badgers trying to solve losing riddle

Wisconsin coach Jeff Sauer is a keep it-simple kind of person, which explains his uncomplicated take on what ailed his team as it hit the quarter pole of the regular season. How did the Badgers endure five straight losses on the heels of seven consecutive wins to open the season? How did Wisconsin go from being the No. 1 team in the nation to being on the outside looking in at the top 10? “It’s very evident what’s wrong,” Sauer said. “There are no secrets. We’re not scoring goals and we’re not scoring goals on the power play” The same outfit that averaged 4.42 goals through seven games labored along at a 2.2 clip in the five losses. So Bowman sought refuge on his fourth-floor balcony. “There was a pool, but it didn’t have any water in it,” says Bowman, the second-last person rescued. “I was getting ready to jump. I wasn’t going to burn to death up there.” He wasn’t panicking, simply assessing the situation. Weighing his options. It’s a telling reflection of the man who was set to coach his 2,000th NHL game Nov. 24 against Vancouver. The current Detroit Red Wings’ bench boss never stops thinking,…

Koo-koo for Kovalchuk Teenage Russian making waves The hockey world is gushing in its praise of Ilya Kovalchuk, the Russian left winger who has rocketed to the top of draft lists. “If the draft were held tomorrow, he’d go No. 1,” says one NHL GM. “He’s as fast as (Pavel) Bure, he can handle the puck like crazy and he’s 6-foot-2,” says another. “With all due respect to the likes of Jason Spezza, Dan Blackburn and Pascal Leclaire,” says Red Line Report, “Kovalchuk is an absolute game-breaker, the type of player who lifts fans out of their seats and leaves them gasping at his moves and puck wizardry.” Kovalchuk blew away the scouts with his performance at the Five Nations Tournament in Salt Lake City in late summer. He scored four goals and seven points in…
