Jovanovski’s game at all-time high
Start spreading the news, the Vancouver Canucks finally have a Norris Trophy candidate. Ed Jovanovski, the No. 1 overall pick in the 1994 entry draft, has been playing the best hockey of his life early this season and was the Canucks’ undisputed MVP through their first dozen games. Jovanovski almost singlehandedly beat the Colorado Avalanche in a Nov. 1 game at GM Place as he scored the winning goal, threw seven hits, blocked four shots, punched out Avalanche winger Adam Deadmarsh in a momentumswinging fight and played 11 minutes in the final period of a 4-3 victory. “That’s the way I have to play, although not every game is going to be this good,” said Jovanovski, who was the Canucks’ key acquisition in the Jan. 17,1998 trading away of Pavel Bure. The 24-year-old Windsor, Ont.,…
Mavericks hope to learn from difficult start
If Troy Jutting had any thoughts his transition from assistant to head coach at Minnesota State-Mankato would be seamless, they dissolved when he looked at the Western Collegiate Hockey Association schedule. Then things got worse. Jutting, hired last spring to replace 30-year coaching veteran Don Brose, saw the Mavericks open with consecutive road series against projected title contenders Colorado College and Wisconsin. Then, upon returning home, Mankato faced defending NCAA champion North Dakota. “It’s a very tough way to get the season started,” Jutting said. “They are three of the best teams in the country. But it’s going to make us a better team down the road.” The Mavericks were swept at Colorado College and Wisconsin, but three of the four games were one-goal losses. Those frustrations were taken out in the opener against…
PLAYER OF THE MONTH
OCTOBER SELECTION: JEREMY ROENICK The Phoenix Coyotes are off to an amazing start. And so is the team’s most entertaining player — Jeremy Roenick. Better known simply as J.R., Roenick led all scorers through the first month of the season with eight goals and 18 points in 10 games. Ziggy Palffy of the Los Angeles Kings also had 18 points, but he played one more game. For his efforts, Roenick is The Hockey News NHL Player of the Month for October. Though the Coyotes have been hounded by the fact the team is about to be sold to a group headed by The Great One, Wayne Gretzky, and most likely their GM, Bobby Smith, would be replaced under the new regime, they have been nearly unbeatable. And much of the thanks must go to…
