Flames’ poor start reason for concern

In September, they promised themselves they would get off to a better start and after a successful exhibition season, it looked as if the Calgary Flames would be true to their word. In the end, however, their October was as forgettable this season as it was last year…or the year before. In becoming the first NHL team to lose to both expansion clubs, Columbus and Minnesota, the Flames went 38-1-0 in October. Last season, they started 3-8-2-0 and were dead and buried a quarter of the way through the season. “Our confidence is fragile now,” said coach Don Hay. ROOKIE REPORT Oleg Saprykin, 19, LW. Saprykin is a dangerous offensive talent, but his transition to the NHL has been slower than anticipated because he’s having difficulty freeing himself from checkers. Still, the Flames are prepared…

Too much time hurting Ozolinsh?

Sandis Ozolinsh had the look of a man who lacked confidence through the early part of the season. The Canes traded for the mobile defenseman for his power play and puck-moving skills, but he appeared uncomfortable in those roles. Coach Paul Maurice said part of the problem may be ice time — too much of it. Ozolinsh logged more than 29 minutes in four of the Canes’ first 10 games. “I don’t think he can play the minutes he has played and be effective,” Maurice said. Ozolinsh, who averaged 22:41 of ice time with Colorado last season, was a team-worst minus-6 through 11 games and had two goals and eight points. Even when Ozolinsh has had some success, he hasn’t endorsed his performance. He described one goal as “a lucky bounce in front…

Contrite Belfour makes amends with courtroom apology to officers

He accepted his punishment and apologized. With those two actions, Dallas Stars goaltender Ed Belfour brought closure to a charge of resisting arrest which had hung over him since an incident at a Dallas hotel March 8. Belfour pleaded guilty Oct. 31 to a misdemeanor count of resisting police transfer and was sentenced to 24 months of unsupervised probation. He was also ordered to pay a $3,000 fine and $225 in court costs and he’ll have to visit two area high schools to speak about alcohol abuse. During his court appearance, Belfour addressed the four Dallas police officers involved in his arrest. “I’m real sorry for the incident that took place,” he said. “I won’t let it happen again.” An intoxicated Belfour was arrested after scuffling with a security guard and had to be subdued…
