NHL TEAM REPORTS

St. Louis veteran shooting lights out

Scott Young’s fast start has some St. Louis Blues’ observers projecting a 40-goal season for the veteran right winger. Young scored six goals in his first four games, a 123-goal pace projected over an 82-game season. “The most I’ve ever gotten was 30,” Young protested, “I’m not going to start thinking like that.” Young scored his career high of 30 in the 1992-93 season with the Quebec Nordiques. He also scored at a 31-goal clip with 18 in 48 games during the lockout-shortened 1995 season and has bagged at least 21 goals in six of his 11 NHL seasons. “He’s playing with a lot of confidence,” said center Pierre Turgeon. “I try to get the puck to him. He sees the openings and gets there at the right time. It doesn’t take him long…

Judson wasn’t offered a contract when camps opened, so he followed coach Greg Puhalski to Fort Wayne.…

Messier marvelous back home in MSG

Call Mark Messier’s return to Madison Square Garden a huge success. Messier scored the game-winning goal as the New York Rangers beat Montreal 3-1 in their Oct. 11 home opener, also the night the franchise celebrated its 75th anniversary season. Messier, who spent the past three seasons in Vancouver, scored a fluke goal off the leg of Canadiens’ defenseman Eric Weinrich as he tried to center the puck from behind the Montreal goal line. It helped the Rangers to a 2-0 record for the first time since 1989 and put them two games over. 500 for the first time since Messier departed in 1997. The MSG crowd gave Messier a long, loud ovation when he was stepped onto the ice during pre-game player introductions. Messier also set up the season’s first goal, by Valeri…

LETTER OF THE WEEK

Policeman not above the law I don’t care if he is Wayne Gretzky’s friend, Marty McSorley should be doing hard time and definitely shouldn’t be allowed back into the NHL! Members of the general public aren’t above the law while they’re at work; neither should NHLers be. Perhaps athletes often seem self-centered and narcissistic because they’re given too much latitude and power in society. They’re role models for our children and should be held to a higher standard, not lesser. I’ve heard the argument that violence is part of hockey and violent acts should be addressed by the NHL. But what does it say about a sport when violence is a priority over responsibility, skill and safety? It’s time to take the violence and fighting out of hockey and put more sportsmanship into it. Curtis…
