Perennial losers believe they can make playoffs

The Lightning did not have the busiest summer. but it was fruitful nonetheless. Tampa Bay swung a trade with the Islanders for goalie Kevin Weekes and signed two of its most valued players-left wingers Fredrik Modin and Todd Warriner—to two-year contracts. The moves have players who have suffered through three consecutive 50-loss seasons believing the team is moving in the right direction. Rookies to watch The Wild will give top pick Marian Gaborik every opportunity to make his mark in camp. GM Doug Risebrough may play it safe, however, and start the 18-year-old with Cleveland of the International League. Jobs up for grabs For the Wild, there…

Hurricanes’ players all signed and sealed-will they deliver?

Since last season’s training camp felt like a ride aboard the Titanic because of the contract squabble of disgruntled captain Keith Primeau, the Carolina Hurricanes are determined to make this year’s camp resemble a trip on the Good Ship Lollypop. All of Carolina’s key players are signed and will presumably be healthy and happy when the Hurricanes open camp. After a series of off-season moves, many of the faces will be different and the Canes are hoping change in this case is a good thing. Here’s what you need to know about Canes’ training camp. Training camp opens Sept. 7 in Raleigh. Pre-season opener Sept. 16 vs. Tampa Bay at Fort Myers, Fla. Rookies to watch At 6-foot-3, goalie Jean-Marc Pelletier covers far more net than the 5-foot-8 incumbent, Arturs Irbe. Pelletier, once ranked ahead of…
