GETTING TOUGHER TO FIND EURO DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH
The well hasn’t run dry. Not yet. But NHL scouts insist it’s getting harder and harder to unearth a bona fide prospect over the age of 20 in Europe who is not already property of an NHL team. “None of these guys over there are all that dramatically attractive,” said one NHL scout. “Then again, when you look at our league, not a lot of the players are dramatically attractive, either.” With the NHL expanding to 30 teams and the talent pool getting thinner, teams are forced to look for late bloomers and many of them are coming from the other side of the pond. The Ottawa Senators hit home runs with Daniel Alfredsson, drafting him as a 22-year-old, Sami Salo, also 22, and Magnus Arvedson who was 26. All three are integral…

They are all natural bom (goalie) killers. And now Marian Gaborik, an 18-year-old Trencin native, is waiting in line for his shot. And like those before him who journeyed from Trencin to the NHL, it’s deadly. But Gaborik isn’t just a one-shot wonder. He’s also an explosive skater with great offensive instincts who can beat defenders 1-on-l. A…
