Gretzky could have big stake in Coyotes

During one of their many meetings in recent weeks, Steve Ellman reached into a bag and pulled out a Phoenix Coyotes’ jersey and presented it to Wayne Gretzky. It had Gretzky’s name and No. 99 on the back. “When my kids saw it,” Gretzky said, “I think I almost had them convinced I was going to play again. I’m not, but it’s a funny story and I might tell it at the press conference.” That’s how serious Gretzky is about joining Ellman in the Arizona developer’s pursuit of buying the Coyotes from Richard Burke for a reported $87 million. Gretzky has an offer on the table to become a majority investor in the franchise, which would include a president and CEO title and the opportunity might be too good to pass up,…

DiPietro: ‘Next great U.S. goalie’

Rick DiPietro agonized over a most difficult decision-whether to forego his college eligibility to opt in to the 2000 NHL entry draft. Now the Atlanta Thrashers, Minnesota Wild, Columbus Blue Jackets and who-knows-who-else must do the same. That is, agonize over whether to make the Boston University freshman, who opted in with only hours to spare before the May 1 deadline, the highest-chosen goalie in NHL entry draft history. That distinction currently belongs to Roberto Luongo, who was taken fourth overall by the New York Islanders in 1997 (not including Michel Plasse, who went first to Montreal in 1968 when NHL sponsorship of junior hockey was still in effect and the draft was a somewhat limited affair). There’s at least one GM who would make the 18-year-old native of Winthrop, Mass., the…

Whalers vs. Colts championship tilt among finest ever

After four games, the verdict was in. This year’s Ontario League final series was considered by many to be the best in years. The Barrie Colts and Plymouth Whalers were deadlocked at two games each in their best-of-seven final following the Colts’ 6-3 win May 10 in Barrie. Detroit Red Wings’ draft pick Ryan Barnes scored two goals before a sold-out crowd of 4,191 at the Molson Centre. The series went back to Plymouth, Mich., for Game 5 two nights later-without Colts’ coach Bill Stewart, who cannot enter the U.S. (See pg. 5 for more on Stewart, Colts.) Last year, the talent-laden Colts were eliminated in the second round. “Maybe we had too many older guys in the dressing room (last year) who all wanted to be leaders, which made it an individual game,”…
