Induct Gretzky as builder, too
It has long been my contention the best way to honor Wayne Gretzky’s astonishing NHL career is to induct him into the Hockey Hall of Fame twice-first as a player, then as a builder. One of the attractions of Gretzky’s 20 NHL seasons is you can split the impact of his career almost right down the middle. In his first nine seasons with the Edmonton Oilers, he had a statistical impact on the league that the NHL had never seen before–or will again. He averaged 185 points per season with the Oilers and won eight consecutive Hart Trophies and seven straight scoring titles. There were also the four Stanley Cup championships and, twice, Gretzky captured the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in the playoffs. In the first month of his 11th…

Gretzky last of fast-track inductees
Wayne Gretzky’s immediate entry into the Hall of Fame this year is the final time a player will get the fast-track treatment. Gretzky is the seventh and final player to be whisked through the doors the same year they retired. The others were Dit Clapper (1947), Maurice Richard (1961), Jean Beliveau and Gordie Howe (1972), Bobby Orr (1979) and Mario Lemieux (1997). From now on, the Hall of Fame has made a three-year wait mandatory. The idea is two-fold: Put everyone on a level playing surface. The selection committee has three years to digest whether a player is worthy of inclusion. Secondly, to ensure the inductee is truly retired. Rod Langway, for example, retired in 1993 and would have been inducted in 1996. He has come out of retirement twice and now…

Humbled Huskies howl, cellar a distant memory
HOCKEY EAST Northeastern University was the only one of the nine Hockey East teams that failed to qualify for the league’s post-season tournament last year. But coach Bruce Crowder told them at the season-ending banquet that when friends and relatives asked them how they did, he didn’t want them to say they finished ninth. “I told them I wanted them to say they finished last,” said Crowder, who hoped the lesson would shame his players into taking steps to ensure it didn’t happen this season. The Huskies have responded, going 1-1-1 in its first three league games, including a 2-2 tie at top-ranked Maine Nov. 5. Prior to the Maine game, NU had suffered a pair of tough 4-2 setbacks at Wisconsin, which was ranked seventh. Senior center and captain Roger Holeczy said finishing last…
