Morrison at home in the Hall
Six years after helping build the current Hall of Fame, Ian ‘Scotty’ Morrison can call the museum home in more ways than one. Morrison is being inducted in the builders’ category and there is no better tribute for the man who ran the Hall of Fame for the majority of this decade. “The game needs more people like Scotty,” said Bill Hay, chairman of the Hall of Fame. “He’s a great family man who loves and respects the game and those who play it. I have a lot of respect for him.” Morrison was a referee in the NHL, its referee-in-chief for two decades and spent 15 years in charge of the Hockey Hall of Fame. Morrison made his debut as a referee in the NHL at the tender age of 24, the youngest…
Bulin wall not going up this season
Just when it looked like contract talks would, pick up steam and result in an agreement between the Coyotes and unsigned goalie Nikolai Khabibulin, things completely fell apart after a five-minute conversation between Khabibulin’s agent and Phoenix GM Bobby Smith. The two sides hadn’t spoken since training camp until Jay Grossman telephoned Smith and gave the Coyotes his first official counter proposal to the team’s three-year, $9 million offer. Smith didn’t reveal any of the details, but it’s believed Khabibulin was still demanding a deal worth close to $5 million a season and Smith told them to forget it. “I’m more pessimistic than ever that Nik will play for us this year,” Smith said. “Their offer was completely unacceptable…We’re planning on not having Khabibulin this season.” Smith said he was expecting “a tempting…
Blueshirts struggle early in season, but Muckier feels job still secure
Not only had the New York Rangers fallen to four games under .500, not only had they failed to win 12 of 17 games, but they had hit bottom. A team that had earlier been shut out three straight games now was blowing a two-goal, third-period lead in a 4-3 loss to the Ottawa Senators Nov. 10. No matter what people thought about their roster and how many reasonable excuses there might have been, there was no excuse for them to be this bad. And so there was little question coach John Muckier’s job was hanging by the slimmest of threads. Yet the Rangers saved their coach, at least for the moment, by coming from behind three times, getting the tying goal with 19 seconds left in regulation and the winner in…
Ferguson big thrill for Conway
As a Pulitzer Prize nominee, Russ Conway is familiar with major honors. With that in mind, Conway said he was thrilled at being named this year’s winner of the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award for newspaper excellence. In fact, Conway said being recognized by his peers for his achievements as a hockey writer is his career highlight. Conway, 50, began his career with the Lawrence (Mass.) Eagle-Tribune in 1967, fresh out of high school and only 18. “Russ is a dedicated journalist whose efforts exemplify what we all try to do in this business,” said former PHWA president Jim Kelley. “He has a great love for the game, but a greater understanding of the principles of journalism and an understanding of how good journalists can make things even better.” Conway earned his Pulitzer bid for a…
