Capitals’ inability to hold leads confounds coach Wilson

A large part of the reason the Washington Capitals missed the playoffs last season was a dreadful 5-19-1 run against teams from the Western Conference, earning just 11 out of a possible 50 points. It doesn’t appear the Caps are learning from experience. After five games this season against Western Conference foes, Washington was 0-3-2. There are no built-in excuses like injuries to fall back on and coach Ron Wilson is spitting nails. Inconsistency has been a primary reason for the downfall. Against the Phoenix Coyotes Oct. 23, the Capitals’ played very well for the first 43 minutes, putting constant pressure on the puck and fashioned a 2-0 lead. Then Washington let its guard down for a few minutes and just that quickly the game was tied, which is how it ended. Four…

Jagr plans shooting binge to bolster goal total

Hard as it is to believe, Pittsburgh Penguins’ captain Jaromir Jagr used to consider shooting one of his weaknesses. Now it’s one of his strengths-and he intends to emphasize that point this season. Through the Penguins’ first eight games, Jagr had 48 shots, six per game. At that pace, he will finish the season with 492 shots, which would be the second-highest total in NHL history. Phil Esposito set the record of 550 in 1970-71, when he played 78 games for the Boston Bruins. No one has come close since. Paul Kariya of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim captured the second-highest mark with 429 shots last season. Jagr learned four seasons ago that more shots means more goals. “I knew I could score a lot more goals than I did and I knew my…

Morrison, Elias sign deals to stay in Lamoriello’s lair

Like so many players before them, young forwards Brendan Morrison and Patrik Elias finally blinked in their efforts to stare down New Jersey Devils’ GM Lou Lamoriello. Unable to land contracts they believed they deserved, the two restricted free agents gave up their mutual fight Oct. 25 and accepted what they felt were lowball offers from the tough negotiator. Both said they would actually sign the contracts when they were physically ready to be added to the roster. Elias, 23, agreed to a three-year deal believed to be worth $2.35 million, including $725,000 this season. That’s a $400,000 raise from last year. Morrison, 24, accepted a one-year contract believed to be worth $500,000 and he will be eligible for salary arbitration after the season. He earned a base salary of $400,000 in 1998-99, along…
