Inconsistent Panthers long way from 1996 Stanley Cup final team

The Florida Panthers were hit by a number of breaks, tears and pulls. And losing Pavel Bure didn’t help for a team long removed from its 1996 Stanley Cup drive. The Panthers were an inconsistent bunch that wasn’t able to put together any hot stretches. The 15-point improvement over the disastrous 1997-98 season was overshadowed by the fact grit and smarts, once hallmarks of this franchise, were too often missing and it couldn’t all be attributed to the large number of rookies in the lineup. Its leadership also seemed to be lacking. Overachievers Defenseman Dan Boyle was called up because of injuries in February and sparked the offense with well-timed forays. Game of musical goalies begins after just one game

Ottawa Senators’ coach Jacques, Martin maintained he would use both his goalies in the playoffs, but it didn’t take him long to make the switch. Only 60 minutes after giving Ron Tugnutt the start in a 2-1 loss in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal against the Buffalo Sabres, Martin said he’d use Damian Rhodes for the second game. While nobody was pointing the finger at Tugnutt for allowing two goals on 15 shots in the opener, Martin sent a clear message he wasn’t going to sit back and let the series slip away. “I thought when ‘Tugger’ got the start in the first game that if we won, then he would go with him again,” Rhodes said. “But I’m really trying not to think about who is going to start. “We were told…
