Hirsch not in Canuck plans, but confident he’ll rebound
After making the long climb back from a season in the minors, goalie Corey Hirsch was dealt another slap to his career when the Vancouver Canucks signed Kevin Weekes and told Hirsch he was the odd man out. Hirsch was not exactly enjoying a banner come-back year-he was 3-8-3 with a 3.13 goals-against average and .890 save per-centage-but still felt he would receive a few more starts in the final quarter of the season. Instead, he will practise and then sit in the press box while newcomer Weekes and veteran Garth Snow share the work. Still, Hirsch was able to maintain an optimistic approach. “My break might be just around the comer,” he said. “It might be next year. It might be two years from now. My best years are still ahead of…
Arnott finds contentment, success with booming shot, shift to center
It didn’t happen overnight. In fact, it took an entire year before Jason Arnott turned the New Jersey Devils into Arnie’s Army. Fourteen months after Arnott’s career was revived by a trade from the Edmonton Oilers, the veteran forward reclaimed his rank as an offensive force capable of carrying a team. Anchoring a line with Czech wingers Patrik Elias and Petr Sykora, Arnott went on a month-long tear that had him challenging Bobby Holik as the team’s No. 1 center. “Everybody keeps telling me to shoot the puck more. I’m trying to do that and I’m hitting the net. Fortunately, they’re going in,” said Arnott, who had five goals in three games through March 3 as the Devils reclaimed a share of first place in the Eastern Conference. Since Feb. 13, Arnott was…
Deskins flashes magic touch as he rockets up scoring list
CCHA Jason Deskins doesn’t know why it’s happening, but he doesn’t want to change anything. “Every time I shoot the puck, it seems, I just look back and it’s going past the goalie,” he said. “I don’t know what’s going on.” That’s the best way the Miami (Ohio) University center could describe his eight-game streak in which he had 12 goals and three assists. The run carried him to the top of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association’s overall goal-scoring list with 25. He was tied for sixth overall with 38 points. As a freshman, the 5-foot-10 and 185-pound native of Warren, Mich., had four goals and 11 points in 30 games. The combination of those stats and his diminutive size were enough to prevent him from being taken in the NHL draft. “I guess I…
IceDogs one step closer to avoiding record of futility
The Mississauga IceDogs have made certain if they go down as the worst team in Canadian Hockey League history, they won’t be alone. IceDogs’ goalie Nick Foley stopped 57 shots and Fraser Clair scored at 8:07 of the third period for a 2-1 win over the Toronto St. Michael’s Majors before 4,131 spectators Feb. 28 at Maple Leaf Gardens. It was only the third win for the Ontario League expansion IceDogs, who needed one point in their final 10 games to avoid finishing tied with the 1995-96 London Knights for the fewest points in CHL history. The Knights went 3-60-3. The IceDogs were 3-52-3. The IceDogs were beaten 15-0 the night before in Barrie for their 27th straight road loss. The OHL record is 29 straight road losses by the 1993-94 Newmarket Royals. It has…
