UHL MID-SEASON REPORT
The most decorated defenseman in United League history is suspended 25 games after throwing his stick. A forward has to play in the net when both of his team’s goalies are ejected for fighting. And sagging attendance has at least two teams ready to move after the season. Yup, it has pretty much been business as usual during the first half of \ the season in the iL wacky and always / unpredictable UHL. Here’s how things shape up heading into the second half of the season. Teams are listed in order of division standing after Jan. 27 games. The fourth-year Kitchener Ranger center has been struck down by Guillain-Barre Syndrome. “I wouldn’t wish it on anyone else,” Payer, 19, said from his bed at University Hospital in London, Ont., where he has been since Jan. 21. Following treatment, doctors were hoping to move Payer to a rehabilitation facility in Kitchener. Doctors expect a full recovery, but it’s unlikely Payer will play again this Ontario League season. He’s the Rangers’ top scorer. Guillain-Barre Syndrome is an inflammatory disorder of the peripheral nerves where the nerves are attacked by the body’s immune system. It causes weakness in the limbs and can result in paralysis. The immune, system recognizes a virus has invaded the body. The immune system thinks the insulation that protects nerves is the virus and…
