Wilson tries to spark his troops with heart-to-heart gab session
If the Washington Capitals are going to make a serious push for the playoffs, it’s going to take action, not talk. But it has to start with talk and that’s why coach Ron Wilson held a two-hour, 45-minute closed door meeting with his players in which he spoke his mind and several of the players unloaded some of their frustrations. It came after Washington’s first game following a five-day all-star break layoff. The Capitals played one of their best second periods of the season against the New York Rangers Jan. 26. They didn’t score but New York did in the third period, three times en route to a 4-1 win. Wilson had seen enough. The following day, after a tough 45-minute skating drill, he presided over the feature-length meeting. With the second half several…

Effective utility player Kron earns spot on ‘Canes top line
He acts as coach Paul Maurice’s utility man. Need a center? How about a winger for either side? Invariably, when the Hurricanes’ coach needs to plug a hole, Robert Kron fills the void. It just so happens Kron’s latest twist shifted him from center on the third line to left wing on the Hurricanes’ top unit alongside center Keith Primeau and right winger Ray Sheppard. In his first game there, Kron made his coach look like a genius, collecting two assists as the Hurricanes won in Pittsburgh 5-3 Jan. 26, the first time the franchise has won there in nine tries dating back to 1995. “He really brings some feistiness and toughness to that line,” Maurice said. “He really brings something alongside Keith and Ray.” The left wing has been a revolving door during…

Buckeyes back in business thanks to Boisvert’s scoring
Though Ohio State has climbed back into the Central Collegiate Hockey Association race after a slow start, the Buckeyes are still having problems scoring goals-with one exception. Junior center Hugo Boisvert was the CCHA’s scoring leader with 17 goals and 37 points in 27 games. The Buckeyes had just 78 goals in 27 games, fewer than three per game. The native of St-Eustache, Que., has been doing it all for the Buckeyes, who were third in the conference with an 11-6-3 record. “He’s a good, two-way player,” said Ohio State coach John Markell. “He has also been asked to score a lot because none of our other guys are finishing right now.” Case in point, Ohio State’s 1-1 tie with Michigan Jan. 23. Buckeyes’ defenseman Ryan Jestadt scored their lone goal with 1:10 remaining…

Blueliner Albelin asks for trade, unhappy with lack of playing time
He started the season in the press box, watching as the seventh defenseman and things have pretty much gone downhill from there for Calgary Flames’ defenseman Tommy Albelin. As a result, Albelin met with Flames’ GM Al Coates and said that if his role weren’t about to change he wanted a trade. Of late, Albelin has played either left wing on the fourth line or not at all. Since early December, defenseman Denis Gauthier-promoted from Saint John of the AHL-has taken Albelin’s spot beside defenseman Cale Hulse, his partner for the past two years. Coach Brian Sutter said he wasn’t unhappy with Albelin’s contribution-he was an effective penalty-killer as a forward-he just wanted to work Gauthier in more. The Flames counted on Albelin for leadership of a young defense last season, but they turned…
