Fans say cut salaries, hike Canadian content
If Joe Fan was NHL commissioner, he would institute a salary cap, play weekend games during the afternoon, move a few teams to Canada and tell expansion teams to take a hike. The NHL Fans’ Association, an Ottawa-based Internet site, conducted a 77-question fan report of its 2,185 registered members. The results were based on 913 responses. Among the findings in the survey: 64 per cent said they don’t want tie games during the regular season decided by a shootout. 77er cent felt punishments handed out for serious infractions were not severe enough. 75 per cent felt there should be a player salary cap. 90 per cent were against the idea of a ban on fighting, while six per cent felt a ban would increase the NHL’s popularity. 66 per cent like afternoon weekend games. 76 per cent…
Early Smoke signals indicate Asheville will be quality home
During seven seasons in Brantford, Ont., the Smoke were often lucky to draw 10,000 fans a month. In Asheville, N.C., they did it on the opening weekend of the United League season. The Smoke may have lost their first two home games to two-time defending champion Quad City, but they were an enormous hit at the box office by attracting a total o! 10,208 fans for losses of 9-7 and 51 Oct. 21 and 24. Player issued stiff suspension
The Ontario Hockey Association suspended a player commensurate to the length of time his victim is injured, plus six games. Jason Duthie, a defenseman for Niagara Falls in the Golden Horseshoe Jr. B. League, broke the arm of St. Catharines’ defenseman Jason Degraw in an October game. He will sit out six games plus the same number of games Degraw misses with the injury. SCOUT JAILED: A former scout was sentenced to four months in jail after pleading guilty to sexually exploiting a young player. Wayne Alexander of Duncan, B.C., confessed to inviting a 17-year-old junior player to engage in a group masturbation session in 1997.
