GM Sather will stick around if team budaet to his likina
With apologies to center Doug Weight and goaltender Curtis Joseph, the most important free agent in the minds of Edmonton Oilers’ hockey fans is the boss. Although GM Glen Sather was still working in early June under the terms of a contract he signed last season, he was for all intents and purposes on the market. Inquiries had been made by the Vancouver Canucks and Atlanta Thrashers about their vacant GM positions. Sather also has a standing invitation from San Jose Sharks’ owner George Gund to run their show. But Sather never once said he was interested in leaving the team he had built into a five-time Stanley Cup champion and rebuilt just recently into a playoff contender. His focus was on the budget he had been handed in early June by…
Keenan still point man with GM’s iob unfilled
In what may be the longest job search in the history of hockey, the Vancouver Canucks rolled into June still without a successor to Pat Quinn, the team’s president and GM fired Nov. 4, 1997. Owner John McCaw entrusted the hiring to Steve Bellringer, the president of Orca Bay Sports and Entertainment, and Stan McCammon, McCaw’s Seattle-based lieutenant. The duo interviewed a number of candidates in May, among them NHL vice-president Brian Burke, Dallas Stars’ assistant GM Les Jackson and player agent Mike Gillis. They were also planning to speak to Edmonton Oiler architect Glen Sather. McCammon said the search has been methodical for a reason. “First, we had to do an inventory of our organization and assess what we had.” he said. “That’s why it has taken a longer period of time to…
Hunt on for free agents
The Los Angeles Kings’ summer vacation started later than in the previous few years, but it still began earlier than all other NHL playoff teams. After making the playoffs for the first time since 1993, the Kings became the only team to be swept out of the first round. But if there’s an upside to that, it’s the early dismissal gave GM Dave Taylor and his staff more time to plan for what figures to be a busy off season, which club officials have promised will include an aggressive pursuit of top-notch free agents. It’s believed the Kings have placed atop their list the names of St. Louis Blues’ defensemen Steve Duchesne and Al Maclnnis. One or both would certainly help the team’s anemic power play and either could play the role…
