’Canes three super men carry crunch-time load

As the Carolina Hurricanes continued to keep their playoff hopes alive, they were relying heavily on three key ingredients: Trevor Kidd, Keith Primeau and Gary Roberts. Since the end of the Olympic break, the Hurricanes had essentially become a three-man team, with Kidd providing the clutch saves and Primeau and Roberts providing the offense. Kidd stopped 43 of 44 shots in a 3-1 win over the San Jose Sharks March 2 and 28 of 29 shots in a 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings three nights later as the team stayed within five points of a playoff spot. “That’s a key right now,” said right winger Sami Kapanen. “This is the time goalies have to step up. No soar in goals scored

The NHL wanted more goals. It hasn’t got its wish. When the league announced there would be a crackdown on obstruction fouls following the 17-day Olympic break, scoring was at an average of 5.3 goals per game. In the first 57 games following the crackdown, scoring went up all right-to an average of 5.4. There was a substantial rise in power play opportunities per game, from 8.7 to 12.7. Credit the addition of an average of two more obstruction calls per game (from 2.2 to 4.3). “For our club. I like it a lot,” said Edmonton Oilers’ coach Ron Low. “And I like it for hockey in general. What you need to know about the 1997-98 season

TV tune out Ratings for the first postOlympic Saturday afternoon slate of games (Feb. 28) on Fox, even by NHL standards, were disappointing. Although specific numbers were not available, the league knows they were down from the pre-Olympic Saturday telecasts. Irish eyes On March 17, NHL senior vice-president Brian Burke will do what he does every year on St. Patrick’s Day–take the day off and celebrate his Irish heritage. Within a week after that, though, he’s expected to decide whether he’ll resign from the league to return to his previous life as a GM.
