Turco becomes second Wolverine to reach 100

It’s common knowledge that Michigan has had one of the most dominant programs in college hockey during the past few years. This one fact puts that success in perspective: the only two goalies in college hockey history with 100 career victories are young men who have occupied the Wolverine crease for the past eight seasons. Steve Shields, now with the Buffalo Sabres, collected 111 victories from 1991 to 1994. And Michigan’s current goaltender, senior Marty Turco, has 101. No. 100 came Nov. 7, in a 5-3 victory over Northern Michigan in Marquette, Mich. His parents were there after making the 300-mile drive from Turco’s hometown of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., and after the game he threw the game puck to his mother, Alma, and handed his stick to his father, Vince, as he…

Goals coming for Murray, but not as often as chances

Need someone to bang and jostle around the net for rebounds and garbage goals? That’s no problem for Los Angeles Kings’ right winger Glen Murray, who stands a sturdy 6-foot-2 and 221 pounds. But when it comes to breakaways, that’s another story. Murray, who readily acknowledges he doesn’t have the most delicate touch with the puck, could only laugh after he squandered three solo chances against the Chicago Blackhawks Nov. 20. After all, he did manage to score his eighth goal of the season, even if it was almost accidental and off the shaft of his stick off a scramble in front. As a result, he was on a pace to exceed the career-high 18 goals he scored for the Boston Bruins in 1993-94. “Someone had better teach me tomorrow to score on breakaways,”…

St. Michael’s GM facing Major decision about future

Gerry Meehan might shuffle back to Buffalo. The former Buffalo Sabres’ GM has been approached by a Western New York sports group to develop start-up plans for a downtown multi-rink facility and to study the feasibility of an Ontario League team in the city. Meehan, currently GM of the expansion Toronto St. Michael’s Majors, is involved with Gold Group, a consulting firm. He has been up-front with St. Mike’s and league officials about the possibility of an eventual conflict of interest, but for the time being he’s staying with the Majors. “I have a commitment to St. Michael’s which I intend to fulfill, but I am exploring the option of consulting for this group,” Meehan said. “It’s still all background and it remains to be seen whether it’s a real thing or if…

Sharks land gritty Ricci

The lengthy quest for another forward capable of playing on the top two lines paid of when the San Jose Sharks obtained talented and gritty center Mike Ricci from the Colorado Avalanche. The Sharks swapped third-year right winger Shean Donovan and their first-round pick in the 1998 entry draft for Ricci Nov. 20 and the Avalanche’s second-round selection next year. “It’s a hell of a trade,” said coach Darryl Sutter. “He’s a top player. I like Dono, but we’re getting the better player. I don’t care about the draft picks.” Ricci, 26, was the fourth player selected, by the Philadelphia Flyers, in the 1990 entry draft. His best offensive season came in 1992-93, when he totaled 78 points, including 27 goals, in 77 games with the Quebec Nordiques. He had a career-high 30…
