Jones-Gretzky hurt in mishap at MSG

The wife of Wayne Gretzky was injured and hospitalized during a bizarre incident which delayed the Oct. 22 New York Rangers-Chicago Blackhawks’ game at Madison Square Garden for about 10 minutes. Ulf Samuelsson of the Rangers checked Sergei Krivokrasov of the Blackhawks into the boards near the penalty box with 6:18 remaining in the third period. A pane of plexiglass collapsed on contact and struck Janet Jones-Gretzky, who sits in the first row behind the boards, in seats which were part of the penalty box until the last few seasons when they became the highest-priced seats in the arena. Jones-Gretzky appeared to be unconscious as emergency medical services workers, team doctor Bart Nisonson and team medical trainer Jim Ramsay rushed to her aid. She was removed on a stretcher and taken to…

Road not so bad after all

The New York Islanders were feeling some good vibrations following an early-season road trip that took them through Florida, California and the United States capital. The Islanders, who scored an NHL-low 99 goals on the road last year and finished with a 10-23-8 record away from home, went 2-2-1 on the tour. “We’ve shown we can be successful on the road,” said coach Rick Bowness. “We had five games and we could have won them all. Forwards Tom Chorske. Mike Hough and Sergei…

The Montreal Canadiens had an interesting dilemma as they concluded the opening month of the season. They have too many players and that usually means a trade is beckoning. But GM Rejean Houle, who doesn’t have the greatest track record in the trade department, said he was in no rush to pull the trigger. “Is it all right if I wait four or five weeks?” he asked. “I can tell you that nothing is planned.” Still, don’t be surprised if Houle’s hand is forced in the coming weeks as his list of unhappy players grows. The GM had no concerns earlier this season when the fist of injured players was long enough that everyone played. But as players started to recover, a logjam was forming. Left winger Brian Savage made his return Oct. 22…
