Canale poised to part with Sting after one season
The much travelled Joe Canale will be on the move again. Sanale, the only man to coach teams in the Ontario, Quebec and Western Leagues, will leave the Sarnia Sting, the London Free Press reported April 25. The only thing remaining is who will announce Canale’s departure. One source said he’ll return to the QMJHL to coach the Moncton Wildcats after a personality conflict arose with Sting principal owner Robert Ciccarelli. Another source said Ciccarelli isn’t happy with Canale’s handling of players. When asked if he was leaving the Sting, Canale said: “I don’t think that has been finalized, so 1 can’t comment on that right now.” When asked about a conflict with Ciccarelli, he said: “Sometimes during the year we had our differences.” “It’s not fair yet to comment,” Ciccarelli said, adding he had “no…

Better work ethic sought for Pens’ oost-Mario era
The 1996-97 season will go down as one of the most memorable in Pittsburgh Penguins’ history, mostly because it was Mario Lemieux’s final one in the NHL. It was the end of an era. But after the spectacular ovations and the special moments provided for and by Lemieux, the season was barely above mediocre. They finished with a 38-36-8 record for 84 points, eight fewer than Northeast Division champion Buffalo Sabres. They were eliminated from the post-season in five games by the Philadelphia Flyers and were severely outclassed in all facets of the game.
