Greatest scorer ever

The genius of Mario Lemieux was that goalies never knew what he was going to do. His legacy is a place on the all-time scoring lists as deceiving as himself. Lemieux abhorred contact-eye contact-with teammates to whom he was about to pass the puck. Likewise, you have to look beyond the numbers to determine Lemieux’s place in history. He is leaving sixth in all-time goals, fifth in point: and either first or second on hockey’s all-time list of crying shames that we didn’t get more. Bobby Orr had only nine seasons during whicl his knees permitted him to be the most breathtaking player in the game’s history. Included in the 13-year Lemieux era were two seasons in which he played 26 and 22 games and one in which he did not perform…

Big injuries, little offense

The theme for the Florida Panthers’ playoff drive was ‘Show Me The Cup,’ but after losing in the first round to the New York Rangers in five games, the new theme was ‘Show Me The Door.’ The Panthers were hurt by key injuries throughout the season and playoffs and the lack of a veteran goal scorer. But they were also hurt repeatedly by allowing big goals-including two to Esa Tikkanen in overtime. Playoff boon Right winger David Nemirovsky, 20, played a gritty, determined style. Center Rob Niedermayer seemed to mature during the series, scoring two goals while being matched against Mark Messier much of the time. Defenseman Robert Svehla had a strong series with a goal and five points. Playoff bust Sophomore defenseman Ed Jovanovski made several costly mistakes early in the series…

Sabres’ shield Shields comes on to rescue team’s playoff hopes

Steve Shields was living his dream. As a result, the Buffalo Sabres were in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Shields, the rookie goaltender who became Dominik Hasek’s backup earlier this season, stepped in for Hasek and promptly recorded three wins over the Ottawa Senators, including a shutout in Game 6 and an overtime thriller in Game 7 to lift the Sabres into the second round matchup against the Philadelphia Flyers. Shields came into the series after Hasek suffered what doctors said was a mild knee sprain in Game 3. Shields won that game, but the Sabres lost the next two. The Sabres somehow managed to pull it together and rallied behind Shields and embattled coach Ted Nolan for a shutout win in Game 6 and a 3-2 overtime thriller in Game 7. “I am so…
