Kings now playing for jobs
As it became apparent the Los Angeles Kings would miss the playoffs for the fourth straight season, coach Larry Robinson began auditioning young players for jobs for next season. He also used the remaining weeks to re-evaluate some players who had been with the team all season, but hadn’t met expectations and will have to fight to keep their jobs. The latter category includes right winger Vitali Yachmenev. He made an impressive debut last season by scoring 19 goals and 53 points and finishing tied for second in rookie scoring, but struggled this season without Wayne Gretzky to set him up. He was also hampered by shoulder and ankle injuries. Yachmenev had 10 goals and 31 points through 75 games. “He has to be more assertive in all areas of the game,” Robinson said.…

Devil forwards overlooked for Selke consideration
Why doesn’t the NHL’s best defensive team have a strong candidate for the Selke Trophy? That’s a question several New Jersey Devils’ forwards are asking. “There has never been talk about one of the forwards from this team as long as I’ve been here,” said center Bobby Carpenter. “I feel that award has become a catch-all award. Guys who don’t win one of the major awards seem to get the Selke.” Devils’ management does not believe in promoting players for post-season awards. In fact, the Devils provide team bonuses for shutouts, points in the standings and other accomplishments and have no individual bonuses in their contracts. But certainly coach Jacques Lemaire’s system isn’t the only reason for the team’s defensive success, which produced its ninth shutout of the season in a 4-0 triumph over…
