Shanahan master of diversion

There are so many ways to get sidetracked by Detroit Rai Wings’ left winger Brendan Shanahan, so many ways to miss the point. Sure, the guy can score, but talk about a personal profile. A West Coast-based cable network recently profiled him as one of three athletes on a list of the world’s coolest bachelors, along with the hottest thing in golf, Tiger Woods, and, get this, a surfer. Mailbags of classic novels sent by fans are still being delivered to him after a magazine portrayed him as a connoisseur of fine literary fiction. Shanahan, 28, amazes teammates with an encyclopedic recall of movies. They name three actors, he has to name the film. Joey Kocur has been the only one to stump him (The Butcher’s Wife). “He’ll just ridicule you, too, if…

Cunneyworth prepared to relinquish ‘C’ next season

Randy Cunneyworth is the Ottawa Senators’ longest-serving captain, but if the club’s wants to pass the torch to somebody else, he’d accept it. Now in his third season as captain, the classy 35-year-old left winger would have no problem handing over the ‘C’ to the likes of Daniel Alfredsson or Alexei Yashin if they’re ready to take charge. Cunneyworth is on the verge of signing of a new one-year deal for next season, but understands the organization might be ready to pass more responsibility onto its young players. “If it’s the right time, I want to do it,” Cunneyworth said. “The ‘C’ isn’t about Randy Cunneyworth, it’s about team.” Cunneyworth is in his 12th NHL season and with his sixth team. He had 11 goals, 34 points and 77 penalty minutes in 68…

McCarty has no regrets for avenging Lemieux’s cheap shot on ‘brother’

The players refer to it merely as ‘The Game.’ The Detroit TV station that aired it labeled it ‘The Brawl in Hockeytown,’ and rebroadcast it twice in two days. The March 26 game between the Colorado Avalanche and Detroit Red Wings, won 6-5 in overtime by the home team, was one that won’t soon be forgotten. The highlights-or lowlights, depending on your point of view-featured right winger Darren McCarty pummeling Avalanche right winger Claude Lemieux; goalies Mike Vernon and Patrick Roy slugging it out at center ice; and Detroit left winger Brendan Shanahan displaying his leaping ability when he intercepted Roy as the goalie tried to help out Lemieux. “This…this was a great game,” McCarty said. “That’s hockey. That’s old-time hockey. People complain about ticket prices. Well, they got their money’s worth in…

Loucks returns to Americans after poor year

A last-place finish did not deter the Tri-City Americans from re hiring coach Bob Loucks. The 46-year-old Loucks agreed March 25 to a contract extension. Terms were not disclosed. Loucks just finished guiding the youthful Americans through Year 1 of a rebuilding program. Tri-City finished in the West Division basement with a 2243-7 record. Last season, Loucks led the Americans to the best record in Tri-City’s history (45-25-2). “I’m looking to make the playoffs next year,” Loucks said. “This isn’t a very good feeling. I don’t want to do it again.” Loucks has previous WHL coaching experience with the Lethbridge Hurricanes and Medicine Hat Tigers. He has a 294-228-35 regular season record and 32-39-0 slate in the playoffs. His 103 regular-season victories with the Americans is a Tri-City record. “I was optimistic something would get…
