Sutter plugs center hole

The remaking of the San Jose Sharks did not stop when the NHL regular season began. The Sharks took another dip into the veteran free agent pool Oct. 12 when they signed 14-year pro Ron Sutter. San Jose had been in desperate need of a checking center since the June trade that sent Jamie Baker to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for defenseman Todd Gill. “One of our holes was a third- or fourth-line center who could be a stabilizing influence with a lead,” said Sharks’ assistant GM Wayne Thomas. “We needed someone who could play defense and win faceoffs.” Sutter, 32, made his Sharks’ debut hours after he agreed to a one-year contract. Crowder, 39, left the University of Massachusetts-Lowell at the end of last season to become the coach at Northeastern. “My only real thoughts team-wise are to get the guys to compete,” said the former Boston Bruin and Pittsburgh Penguin. “If you can get a team to play every night and develop a great second and third effort, it’ll really help. Edmonton Oilers’ defenseman Dan McGillis is the most notable senior not back this season. Crowder was…

Van Hellemond backs directive with stern action

It didn’t take Andy Van Hellemond long to make his presence felt in the East Coast League. Shortly after the exhibition season started. Van Hellemond issued Dan Fournel of the South Carolina Stingrays a seven-game suspension and fined him $400 for what appeared to be a deliberate attempt to injure Shawn Harris of the Charlotte Checkers with a cross-check in the mouth Oct. 12. A longtime NHL referee, Van Hellemond is the league’s new senior vice-president, hockey operations. “(Fournel) raised his stick and struck (Harris) in the face,” Van Hellemond said. “I talked to Dan. I wanted to know what his thought process was. I talked to (South Carolina coach) Rick Vaive and I talked to (ECHL commissioner emeritus) Pat Kelly, who was at the game. “I looked at the tape and felt he…
