Fabulous Baker boy shines for Big Green
Scott Baker is again whipping up some recipes for success for the Dartmouth College Big Green. The junior goalie from Chepachet, R.L, has received an extra dose of confidence after the Christmas break, and as a result, had the Big Green back in the playoff hunt. He put on a seven-course show when the Big Green hosted explosive Vermont Jan. 27. With 4,527 fans packed into the Thompson Arena, the largest crowd for a regular-season Eastern College Athletic Conference game this season, Baker stopped 29 shots to allow Dartmouth to gain a 3-3 tie with the nationally-ranked Cats. After an 0-9-1 start, Dartmouth rebounded with a 4-4-2 record in its next 10 games and Baker was the big factor. He was named MVP of the USAir/Sheraton Classic after stopping 53 shots and allowing…

Niedermayer prepared for possible deal
If February didn’t start as a countdown to a trade for a goal-scoring forward, it certainly felt that way to New Jersey Devils’ defenseman Scott Niedermayer. “I’ve talked to my agent (Don Meehan) and he has talked to general managers around the league,” Niedermayer said. “I kind of know what’s going on and I feel comfortable with it. The only thing really disturbing me is I have no control over it. If it’s going to happen, I wish they’d do it.” Among his possible destinations was: the Dallas Stars in a deal involving center Mike Modano; Buffalo Sabres for center Pat LaFontaine; and Winnipeg Jets in a transaction that would include either center Alexei Zhamnov or right winger Teemu Selanne. “I’m not really wanting a trade. I can’t think like that,” Niedermayer said.…

First-year blueliners help Spartans thrive
Some thought for the Michigan State Spartans to be successful this season, they’d have to win in spite of their young defenseman. Instead, they were doing well because of them. The play of freshmen rearguards Chris Bogas and Jeff Kozakowski was a big part of the reason the Spartans were first in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Bogas, a 6-foot-l, 191-pound native of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, led Spartan blueliners with 15 points (all assists) and a plus-21 mark in 20 CCHA games. Kozakowski, a husky 6-foot, 206-pounder from Garden City, Mich., wasn’t contributing as much offense (two goals and four points), but was playing a clever, steady and poised game. Bogas, 19, played last season with the Omaha Lancers of the United States League while Kozakowski, 21, skated with the Dubuque Fighting Saints…

TRYING TIMES
Jeremy Roenick barrels over the Toronto Maple Leaf blueline with the puck on his stick, his eyes on the net and scoring on his mind. The Leafs’ strategy is to deny him the puck, but it’s too late for that now, the distance is closing and there’s only one question left: where is J.R. going? J.R. is going for a spin. Slashing in from left wing, he angles slightly toward the middle, then suddenly pivots on his left skate and whirls clockwise back to the outside boards. A right-hand shot, he is beyond the defenseman’s reach, but has created a bad angle on his backhand. Felix Potvin turns aside the shot. The Roenickian Revolution, a kid’s move from a master, is ultimately unsatisfying. The view from above says he should have done more. It’s a…
