Mooseheads halt streak of Olympique proportions

The Halifax Mooseheads sure know how to spoil a party. A standing-room-only crowd of 4,037 crammed into the Robert Guertin Arena Jan. 28 expecting to see the hometown Hull Olympiques enter the Canadian Hockey League record book with a 25th consecutive victory, tying the mark set by the Sorel Eperviers in 1973-74 and equalled by the Kitchener Rangers in 1983-84. But Mooseheads’ goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere had different ideas. Giguere, the first Quebec League player selected at last year’s NHL entry draft (13th overall by the Hartford Whalers), was outstanding as he made 34 saves to lead the Mooseheads to a 6-4 victory. At the other end of the ice, Hull goalie Jose Theodore, a hero for Canada at the World Junior Championship, saw his bubble burst as he allowed six goals on only 14…

Happy new year, so far

The Hartford Whalers are showing signs they might just be able to glue this mess of a season back together before it’s too late. Management ceased tinkering for now, their most feared scorer (Brendan Shanahan) returned to health, the goaltender (Sean Burke) performed miracles and the Whalers went 8-4-2 in January. Perhaps the best way to measure how far the Whalers came was with the last two games of the month. At the outset of a six-game, 14-day road trip, the Whalers were faced with back-to-back games-which came on the heels of a cross-continent plane ride. On. Jan. 30, the Whalers were humbled 8-2 by the San Jose Sharks. Less than 24 hours later, they beat the Los Angeles Kings 6-4. “You don’t want to think about it in these terms,” said coach…
