The NHL’s Central Scouting Bureau released its mid-season ranking Jan. 24 on four separate lists: North American skaters; North American goalies; European skaters and European goalies. What follows is the entire ranking. The first two rounds of North American skaters include name, position, height, weight team, league, games, goals, assists, points and penalty minutes. The top five goalies include games, goals-against average, height and weight. The top 20 European skaters and six goalies include height and weight. In parentheses after each player’s team is league (if playing major junior or U.S. college) and province or state (if playing Jr. B, Tier II, U.S. independent junior, high school or prep school or midget). Rookie Blackhawk making big impact
When the Calder Trophy for the NHL’s top rookie is given out this summer, there’s a good chance you’ll hear the name of Chicago Blackhawks’ right winger Eric Daze. Two seasons ago, Daze (pronounced dahzay) was considered a marginal prospect for NHL play. The Blackhawks selected him in the fifth round, 90th overall, in the 1993 entry draft. He put up big numbers for the Beauport Harfangs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in 1993-94 (59 goals, 107 points) and ’94-95 (54 goals, 99 points), but didn’t really start to emerge until midway through that second season. Daze was invited to the training camp of Canada’s team at the World Junor Championship and made the squad only as a late addition. The Chinese were just trying to capture the spirit of the thing.
