He shoots, he smiles
Peter Bondra loves goals. He goes nuts every time he scores one, he goes nuts when other guys score while he’s on the ice. There is no rhyme or reason-just unadulterated, childlike abandon. “When he scores a goal and he jumps and bounces off the glass, he’s really pumped,” said Washington Capitals’ coach Jim Schoenfeld. “That pumps the crowd up, it pumps the team up, you can see that here’s a guy who loves to score goals.” With 34 goals in 47 games to lead the league, last season was a love-in for Bondra. This season he picked up right where he left off, scoring in his first game back from a contract holdout in a 7-4 loss to the Los Angeles Kings Oct. 20. “I was sort of happy, all excited,” Bondra…
Coach ticked at poor effort

So the Bruins’ first-year coach was annoyed Oct. 26, when his team played at FleetCenter for the first time since Oct. 9 and turned in a half-hearted performance in a 4-2 loss to the Washington Capitals. That loss, which dropped Boston into the Northeast Division basement at 2-4-2, followed a 4-2 loss to the Red Wings at Detroit Oct. 21 in which Kasper was also less than pleased with the club’s collective effort. “Obviously, this isn’t good enough,” said Kasper, who had spent three days drilling the club on the importance of winning 1-on-l battles. “We’re going to have to re-evaluate. When I’m standing on the bench…
Niedermayer takes flight
Rob Niedermayer got his first good look at the Stanley Cup this past summer when his brother, New Jersey Devils’ defenseman Scott, brought the trophy to the family’s home in Cranbrook, B.C. Apparently, it left quite an impression on Niedermayer, because the Florida Panthers’ center has been playing as if he’s on a mission to put his name on the Cup, too. After being regulated to a fourthline center his first two years in the NHL, Niedermayer is suddenly banging the boards and scoring. The fifth overall pick in the 1993 entry draft, Niedermayer had four goals in nine games, playing on the team’s top line with right winger Scott Mellanby on his right and left winger Radek Dvorak. “I just have more confidence this year,” Niedermayer said. “It helps when the coach shows…
