Time to deal with dough
How I spent my summer vacation, by Edmonton Oilers’ GM Glen Sather; now that ought to make for some interesting reading. Sather looks down the roster and sees 13 players who are due to become free agents in July. Some he’ll sign, some he won’t. In some cases he may not even try. “As much as you don’t want to talk about contracts, that’s going to be the continual question that you guys dog me with,” Sather said. Shayne Corson wants $1.7 million (Cdn.), Doug Weight will ask for over $1 million, Kelly Buchberger is likely seeking $700,000 and Kirk Maltby, who made $170,000 this season, is due for a raise. There are many others, including Louie DeBrusk, Peter White, Dean Kennedy and Ken Sutton. Maybe even before he does anything else, Sather will…
Jets happy to be home
Shortly after the “For rank Sale” sign disappeared from the Winnipeg Jets, the same signs disappeared from in front of the players’ homes. “I’ve never seen the city embrace something like this before,” said Jets’ center Randy Gilhen, a native of Winnipeg. “As players, I want the people of this province to know how much we appreciate this. It really humbles us.” The fans were on the minds of many players after the franchise was kept in Winnipeg by an amazing outpouring of local and government support. That included a May 16 “Save the Jets” concert/rally attended by 35,000. “It’s the fans who gave the Jets a second chance to stay here,” said Jets’ captain Keith Tkachuk. “They’ve been so loyal.” Tkachuk said he’s excited about the team staying put. “It has been such a…

Lebeau bids Ducks adieu
The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim lost their third-leading scorer, center Stephane Lebeau, when he signed a two-year deal with Lugano in the Swiss League in May. Ducks’ GM Jack Ferreira said it wasn’t a given Lebeau would have been back after playing out his option on a deal that would have paid him $650,000 in a full year last season. “I wasn’t sure we were going to make a qualifying offer,” Ferreira said. Lebeau saved them the decision by jumping ship to join his brother Patrick in Switzerland. “It’s nothing against the Ducks,” Lebeau told Le Journal de Montreal. “It’s something I’ve discussed with my wife, Chantale. We want a new experience that at the same time will allow me to earn a living playing hockey.” The Ducks were informed of Lebeau’s decision to leave…
