Stavro takeover bid halted by courts
When the summer began, millionaire Steve Stavro had all but completed his takeover of one of the jewels of the North American sports world. As the summer ended, however, it looked like Maple Leaf Gardens and the Toronto Maple Leafs were about to escape the reclusive grocery magnate’s grasp, the result of an intriguing series of events that may set the stage for a bidding war of record-setting proportions. On Aug. 15, an Ontario judge placed an injunction on Stavro’s plans to take the Gardens and the NHL franchise private. That forces a future court to decide whether Stavro illegally bought the hockey team too cheaply and if his purchase should be wiped out. The case and the ultimate ownership fate of the Gardens and the Leafs could take years to decide. The acquisition…
Mellanby seeking $6 million
Florida Panthers’ right winger Scott Mellanby will have to wait until at least late September for the outcome of his $6-million lawsuit over a barroom fight. The lawsuit claims an injury Mellanby received during the 1989 altercation cost him the opportunity to be one of the NHL’s top players. Mellanby, 28, had his left arm slashed by broken glass in a dispute at Steamer Jake’s bar inside the Muskoka Sands Inn in Gravenhurst, Ont., Aug. 19, 1989, causing nerve and tendon damage. He attempted to intervene in an argument over a ripped $30 shirt between his friend Jeff Fraser and two other bar patrons, Frank Chapple and his son Jeff Chapple of Mississauga, Ont. Jeff Chapple was dropped from the lawsuit part way through the trial. Frank Chapple had been charged with…
Parker replaces mentor Templeton in North Bay
Shane Parker is returning to the home room, this time as the teacher, not the student. Parker has taken over as coach and general manager of the Ontario League champion North Bay Centennials following the surprise resignation of Bert Templeton. Parker, 30, coached the Windsor Spitfires last season after spending five years in North Bay as an assistant to Templeton. At the time, Templeton said if Parker returned for another season with the Centennials, it would be like repeating kindergarten. Parker, often at odds in Windsor with his star player, Bill Bowler, was fired after the season. The North Bay classroom will be a tough assignment as the Centennials are already pegged as favorites to repeat as OHL champions. Just as difficult a task will be working for Centennials’ owner John Hopper. Templeton’s eight-year relationship…
NHL season jeopardized by stalled negotiations
NHL players’ wallets could be bulging with something other than money this fall: They could be full of receipts. The league is going to strip players of everything from travel and food allowances to the clothes off their backs. (Be A Player apparel is forbidden on company time.) Commissioner Gary Bettman said the series of salary, pension and benefit rollbacks enunciated in an Aug. 1 letter would result in a savings of $20 million (U.S.) for NHL teams. Another source pegged it as high as $50 million (U.S.). Players have indicated they will go along with the Bettman initiative (see page 9 for details) for now, but count on them collecting receipts in anticipation of a settlement and reparation payments. Full-scale war could break out in the meantime. The Aug. 23 Toronto Star said all…
