Roster changes may profoundly alter Eastern race

Last-minute player moves could have a profound effect on the outcome of the jumbled Eastern Division race in the East Coast League. The Hampton Admirals and Roanoke Express took direct hits which cost each their leading scorer for the rest of the season. Roanoke, involved in a three-way dogfight with the Charlotte Checkers and South Carolina Stingrays to hold off the Richmond Renegades’ belated playoff run, loaned Lev Berdichevsky Feb. 5 to the American League’s Adirondack Red Wings and wound up losing the 39-goal scorer permanently. Hampton Roads will be without Shawn Wheeler, who was signed by the AHL’s Hershey Bears Feb. 10. The Admirals’ veteran, who served as a player/assistant coach, had 31 goals and 74 points in 47 games. Berdichevsky had at least one point (four goals, two assists) in his first…

Although the St. Louis Blues finished their marathon nine-game homestand on a high note with three straight wins, something happened in the last game that might throw them off-key. Playmaking center Craig Janney missed the final period of the 4-1 victory over the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim Feb. 20 with what the club called a “sore knee.” He was listed as day-to-day, but Blues’ ortho-pedic surgeon Dr. Jerome Gilden said Janney would be sidelined at least seven days. “It’s a knee strain-a grade I strain,” Gilden said. “That’s usually a week. I think it’s minor.” Janney was injured near the end of the second period when a Ducks’ player hit him low as he skated through the neutral zone. He said the injury was “nothing big.” The Blues could ill-afford to lose Janney, the team-leader…

Maley making noise

The New York Islanders didn’t pick up Dave Maley for his offensive skills. When general manager Don Maloney acquired the seven-year veteran from the San Jose Sharks Jan. 24, it was with the hope he would add size and grit up front. Maloney has emphasized the need to make the Islanders bigger and tougher and Maley certainly helps. He is 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds and made a big impact in his first weeks with the team. Maley and right winger Pat Flatley played on the same line together at the University of Wisconsin in the early 1980s and coach Al Arbour put them together on numerous occasions. Maley is expected to be working down low, a blue collar plugger for white collar scorers. But he has shown he can make occasional contributions on offense. He…
