Slumping Ricci ends up in Page’s bad books

It was a rude awakening for Mike Ricci. The Quebec Nordiques’ center, who has struggled all season, was left out of the lineup by coach-general manager Pierre Page Jan. 7 in a 6-4 loss to the Edmonton Oilers. Joining Ricci in the press box was Russian winger Valeri Kamensky, who was also mired in a slump. It marked the first time in the 22-year-old’s pro career he was scratched for non-injury reasons. The reasoning behind it was simple. The fiery center hasn’t been very fiery this season. Oddly enough, Ricci was the first to admit his game has been off. “I know I’ve been horrible,” Ricci said. “But I’m not the only one who is having a bad season. I’m not looking for excuses, but solutions. They should tell me what I’m doing wrong and…

Kudelski trade nets toughness

There is no truth to the rumor Bob Kudelski needed surgery to remove the smile from his face after being traded by the Ottawa Senators to the Florida Panthers. Kudelski, the Senators’ leading goalscorer, was dealt to the Panthers Jan. 6 for 6-foot-4, 210-pound left winger Scott Levins, right winger Evgeny Davydov, and fourth- and sixth-round entry draft choices in either 1994 or 1995. “Things couldn’t have worked out better,” said Kudelski, who was a longtime subject of trade rumors. Kudeslki is 29 and becomes a free agent at the end of the season. Kudelski’s off-season home is in Bonita Springs, Fla., about a 90-min-ute drive across the state from the Panthers’ Miami base. His wife is there now anticipating the birth of their first child. Kudelski was fourth in the league in goalscoring…

Second chance for Holan

Milos Holan figured he had one shot to make it as a Philadelphia Flyer this season, so it had to be a good one. The 22-year-old rookie defenseman from the Czech Republic opened the season with the Flyers, but after two games was assigned to the Hershey Bears of the American League. The best defenseman in the Czech and Slovak Elite League last year didn’t get a call back, even when the Flyers traded Greg Hawgood to the Florida Panthers Nov. 30. Holan made comments about returning to his native country after Christmas to play in the Olympics and the World Championships. The Flyers haven’t been getting much production from the blueline corps on the power play, so they made a call for Holan Jan. 3. Five days later, Holan paid dividends. Midway through the…
