Thrilling race for top playoff performer award

Who knew, outside of a few in Missouri, that Curtis Joseph had become the league’s dominant goalie? Did anyone suspect Toronto Maple Leafs’ center Doug Gilmour could lift his game even higher than the splendid heights reached in the regular season? Or that Ray Ferraro would rebound so vigorously after missing the regular season with a broken leg? Who could have predicted Wayne Gretzky, suddenly 32 and largely ineffective after returning from upper back problems, would yet again prove his critics wrong. The Hockey News/Sherwood Playoff Performer of the Year commemorates those post-season feats. The award is the latest addition to the list of THN hardware. It will be presented at the Hockey News Awards Luncheon June 18. Award organizers thought it was time to salute the most valuable performers in the most important time of…

Explosive rookies rocket to NHL stardom

In a season that will go down in history as boasting the best NHL rookie class ever, record-breaking rookies Teemu Selanne and Joe Juneau were the cream of the crop. The Finnish Flash and the rocket scientist from Pont-Rouge, Que., stood above all other first-year players in the NHL this past season to emerge as the finalists for the THN/Gillette Rookie of the Year Award. The Winnipeg Jets’ Selanne set NHL records for goals (76, which tied the Buffalo Sabres’ Alexander Mogilny for the league lead) and points (132) by a rookie. It was the first time in league history a first-year player either led or tied for the lead in goals. Juneau, of the Boston Bruins, tied the NHL mark for rookie assists with 70, which established a new high for left…

Spirited performance sabotaged by inexperience

They won fewer games in this year’s playoffs then last season, but the Winnipeg Jets were a lot closer to a first-round victory. A year ago, they were powerless against the Vancouver Canucks, even though they won three of the first four games. In this year’s version of the postseason, the Jets won only twice in the first-round series against Vancouver, but were never far from the fine line that separates winners from losers. “Experience was certainly a key factor,” said coach John Paddock. “You look at how we played after the first two games and you’ll find we did a lot of adapting to playoff style and intensity.” The overhauled Jets, five rookies in tow, were tentative in the first two games. They lost both, despite having tied both in the third period. The…
