Top players show abundance of heart and talent

The two finalists for The Hockey News/Black Velvet Player of the Year are as dissimilar as two players can be. THN readers selected Pittsburgh Penguins’ center Mario Lemieux and Toronto Maple Leafs’ center Doug Gilmour finalists for the player of the year award. Lemieux is six inches taller and 60 pounds heavier. In fact, the one thing they have in common is the size of their hearts. The latest chapter in Lemieux’s fame is his recovery from Hodgkin’s disease. Ninety five per cent of people treated for the disease at the early stage recover but Lemieux, whose back woes forced him to confront the possible end of his career, had to grapple with a mortality far more serious than that of his career.
