Coffey piping hot in debut much to delight of locals
Paul Coffey heard the cheers. They cheered him before the warmup and they cheered him before he stepped on the ice for the opening faceoff. The fans at Joe Louis Arena just wanted to show their appreciation for the Detroit Red Wings’ most recent acquisition when Coffey played his first home game with his new team Feb. 3. But he was as nervous as a rookie before he stepped on the ice. “They’re just flashing the Pistons’ score up on the scoreboard,” veteran Brad McCrimmon said before Coffey took to the ice. Coffey laughed a nervous laugh and sped off to begin another chapter of an epic career. “It was a great feeling,” he said. “But I was nervous.
