Replacements won’t be tolerated
An open letter to Bill Wirtz, owner of the Chicago Blackhawks: Under no circumstances will my season-ticket partners or I attend playoff games at the Stadium if replacement players are used. We have grown weary of the lack of co-operation between the owners and the NHL Players’ Association. It is the fans who support your teams, who will be cheated. It will not be tolerated. Don’t lose sight of how long it took the fans to forgive you for the Bobby Hull debacle in 1972. Some of them never have. We support your organization, we’re there when you need us. It’s bad business to turn your back on your most valuable asset, the fans. Ronald R. Cook, First Balcony Section S, seats 1 and 2 Yes, butt… The Hockey News obviously got just half the story in…

The Islanders had always credited the “Bomber” for making them a more confident team when he was acquired from Los Angeles in November. 1989. The Isles demonstrated their confidence in him this season offering him a contract worth more than $300,000 per year. With Baumgartner gone, it would appear Mick Vukota, the lone remaining tough guy, has his hands full. But Vukota disagrees. “You’re never really alone,” he said. “We have guys like Richie Pilon, Joe Reekie, Steve Thomas, Tom Fitzgerald, Gary Nylund, Benoit Hogue, Bill Berg. All those guys…

Second wind for Sundin
Whenever Mats Sundin is complimented on his fine second half of the season, he accepts it cautiously. Hidden subliminally in the praise, Sundin hears, ‘Where the heck were you during the first half?’ “Let’s just say I would have been more satisfied if I had started the season along with everyone else,” said the Quebec Nordique center. Sundin has dressed for every game this season but on many nights he took the role of an innocent bystander. He had a tough time picking up where he left off after a brilliant Canada Cup for Team Sweden. “I was tired and wouldn’t admit it,” Sundin said. “I simply did too much. Two training camps, a World Championship, a Canada Cup and an 80-game schedule in a 12-month period was too much. I only had about…
