Boys of winter warmer than most

A suntan is supposed to be one of the perks of covering baseball spring training. Why then do I get frostbite everytime I walk into the Toronto Blue Jay locker room? In five days, I have seen almost as many unpleasant incidents between players and media persons as I have in 18 years of covering the NHL. Dave Stieb, when asked by a reporter if she could ask two questions, demanded to know the two questions and then said they didn’t interest him. Jack Morris, who had agreed to a set time for an interview with one writer, answered questions monosylabically while reading a newspaper, then became annoyed when the reporter asked if maybe there was a better time. I have seen players walk by auto-graph seekers, all of whom could have…

Will this be the year Murray’s jinx ends?

Defend Bryan Murray’s playoffcoaching record? I’d rather defend Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait. Besides, he does a pretty fair job defending himself. “I think I’m a good playoff coach,” he said, taking the offensive against what has become an annual springtime event: bashing the guy for his teams’ playoff failures. But for perhaps the first time in his otherwise splendid NHL career, Murray believes he has the team that will allow him to prove himself. His Detroit Red Wings are threatening to run away with the Norris Division and with 12 games remaining, were tied with Vancouver for the best record in the Campbell Conference. Should the two teams meet in the Stanley Cup semifinals, as many expect, Murray finally will finally get redemption. For whatever reasons, and he can list many, Murray’s teams…

Charron finds right tonic to ease team of tension

Maybe they’ll stop confusing him with Guy Chouinard now. Or Guy Carbo nneau. Guy Charron stepped out of the shadows March 3 when the Calgary Flames named him the franchise’s seventh coach only 15 games from the end of the NHL season. Charron replaced Doug Rise-brough, who relinquished the coaching reins to concentrate on general manager’s duties. Charron’s appointment is until the end of the season, when Risebrough will review the situation. Paul Baxter was named cocoach, but Risebrough said the final decisions will rest with Charron. “Somebody has to be the boss in terms of making split-second decisions,” Risebrough said. Considered one of the NHL’s bright young men, Charron joined the Flames two years ago, in part because they were looking to groom someone to replace Risebrough as a coach. Charron’s approach is to…

Roenick’s milestone not pretty

The Chicago Blackhawks rarely play a finesse game. So it wasn’t surprising Jeremy Roenick’s 50th goal of the season wasn’t a thing of beauty. Roenick, 22, became the third player in franchise history to score 50 goals in a season when he banked one in off Ray Bourque’s leg March 7 in a 2-1 win at Boston. Roenick admitted fantasizing about how he would score his 50th but the way he got it wasn’t part of those dreams. So how did Roenick envision getting his milestone goal? “I’m all by myself, top comer,” he said. “It wasn’t like that but a goal is a goal. I kind of knew it wasn’t going to be too pretty. The scenario that has always been around me is that the most important ones aren’t the prettiest…
