Viktor Tikhonov’s mighty Soviet national team had just lost the gold medal in the Winter Olympics to a bunch of college kids from the United States. Leonid Brezhnev, the leader of the Soviet Union and the Communist party, had requested a meeting with Tikhonov. He had failed in his first Olympics and expected the worst. “Don’t be upset Viktor,” Brezhnev said, hugging the coach. “It doesn’t matter that Team USA won the Olympics. Hurting Mario frustrated

Pittsburgh Penguins’ president Howard Baldwin wants Mario Lemieux to sign a contract that will cover the rest of his playing days. But there’s a chance Lemieux already did. Several years ago. Lemieux, dismayed by yet another recurrence of back trouble in late January, said he has thought about retiring, even though he has no immediate plans to do it. “It’s too early (to say if he will retire), but I’ve thought about it,” Lemieux said. “If it’s going to hurt me for the rest of my life, it’s not worth it.” His latest problem began before a game against Winnipeg Jan. 28. NHL PRO SET SPOTLIGHT

Winnipeg Jets’ goaltender Bot Essensa, who recorded two shutouts in three games, was named NHL Pro Set player of the week for the period ending Feb. 2. Essensa posted a 2-0-1 record and a 1.30 goals-against average to lead the Jets into second place in the Smythe Division. Throughout the 1991-92 season, Pro Set Inc., will donate $600 to the youth hockey organization designated by the player of the week. Pro Set will also contribute $1,200 on behalf of the player of the month and $8,500 for the player of the year award winner. In its second season as sponsor of these NHL Awards, Pro Set is contributing over $56,000 to youth hockey organizations across North America.
