Olympic hockey’s a waste of time
Under normal circumstances, this would have been about the time I’d be getting ready to go to the Olympics. In fact, it’s the first time in Lecade I won’t be headed for the Stines, and I’ll let you in on a little secret: I’m not going to miss it. I’ll let you in on another little secret: unless you’ve got relatives involved in the Games, you’re better off watching the competition from home than travelling around the globe to see what amounts to intramural hockey. There are very few times in my life I’ve sat in a hockey arena and thought to myself; “You know, Don Cherry might be right.” Watching the last two Olympiads are among those rare occasions. You want the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat? Well, don’t…

Other side of the Whitney story
Vance Oliver’s story on Ray Whitney’s German adventure in the Nov. 15 issue of THN was factually incorrect and misleading. First, Whitney played for Koln, not Dusseldorf. Though the two cities are relatively close in proximity and are arch-rivals, the mistake is comparable to mixing up the Calgary Oilers and Edmonton Flames: an insult to all. Ironically, the Canadian Olympic team, from which Whitney was cut, went 1-1-1 against teams in the “not very serious” league. We realize it isn’t the NHL, but the picture painted by Whitney was biased. The story on this side of the pond regarding Whitney’s departure is as follows: He came to a foreign country as a teenager who couldn’t speak the language…

Tippett leaves in search of gold and a little more playing time
Dave Tippett is getting a second chance…at a gold medal, that is. The Washington Capitals agreed to loan the 30-year-old left winger to the Canadian Olympic team Jan. 31 and the seldom-used forward is grateful for the opportunity. “It’s tough not playing every night (here),” said Tippett, who played for Canada at the 1984 Winter Games in Sarajevo. “But it’s an opportunity to play very competitive hockey and anybody would be crazy to think that playing in the Olympics isn’t a great thrill. “By the same token, I’ll go and play 10 or 12 games in a short period of time to get in game shape for the stretch.” Tippett and Canadian coach Dave King have known each other for years and their styles meld well. Reports of Tippett’s loan had come up a number…
