Sabres come a’ Colin, take home Patterson

On Colin Patterson’s first day on the job with the Buffalo Sabres, the visiting San Jose Sharks showed up at Memorial Auditorium for practice. “I’m sitting there,” said Patterson, “and (San Jose coach) George Kingston walks by. He looks at me kind of funny and says, ‘Colin, what are you doing here?’ I said, ‘I just got traded.’ He said, ‘Oh yes?’ I said, ‘Yeah, George…to Buffalo.’” Some background is necessary here. Patterson almost became a Shark twice during last May’s expansion draft and then again just recently after he asked the Flames to trade him. Goalie’s death linked to heart disorder

Hockey players wear pads to protect bones, cups to protect groins, helmets to protect heads, visors to protect eyes and mouthguards to protect teeth. But the death of a 16-year-old goaltender in suburban Montreal Oct. 20 underscored once again how Canada’s national sport is still a deadly game. And probably always will be. As he fell, with his head turned to one side, he was hit on the neck with a stinging…

Two-job Murray building a winner

Almost every day in the NHL, a coach and his general manager have a conversation like this: Coach: We ‘re getting killed out there. I need some size, some presence. Is Hammerhead still available? GM: I haven’t talked to them since last month. They wanted Brickwall, LaPeenom and a No. 1 pick for him. They think he’s another Messier! I can’t stand dealing with those guys. They think they’re geniuses. Coach: Look, I had Boomalot in juniors. He’s a good kid and I keep reading he’s on the block. Don’t the Cyclops need a back-up goaltender? GM: Yeah, but there are a dozen goaltenders on the market. We can’t even get a No. 3 for Babblingbrook. … For seven years, Bryan Murray had these sorts of talks with Washington Capitals’ general manager David Poile—one of…
