Personality transformation key to blockbuster trade
In the end, Pierre Turgeon and Uwe Krupp left with class and dignity. No one expected anything else and maybe that was a part of the problem. Turgeon, Krupp, Benoit Hogue and recently acquired Dave McLlwain were dealt to the New York Islanders Oct. 25 for Pat LaFontaine, Randy Wood, Randy Hillier and a draft choice. The move was made for two reasons: 1. To get LaFontaine and 2. To change the character and personality of the Buffalo Sabres. “We wouldn’t have done this if we didn’t think we were improving our team’s chances (of success),” Sabres’ general manager Gerry Meehan said. “We’ve also improved the personality of our team.” Personality was the key. Meehan made the deal after the team got off to a 2-5-1 start and showed signs of ineptitude when facing…

Coming up Rosie
Vladimir (Rosie) Ruzicka may still be an unproven commodity in the NHL, but he spent 10 years cruising the big rinks of Europe as a genuine legend. “He’s some kind of hero back home,” says Montreal Canadiens’ defenseman Petr Svoboda of his countryman, who starred for many years on the Czechoslovakian national team before moving west. There is understandable pride in the 28-year-old’s voice as Ruzicka, in what’s becoming more and more passable English, recounts his Czechoslovak exploits: Ten years in the Czechoslovakian first division. Eight years on the national team. Six league goal-scoring titles, and three scoring crowns. A single-season high of 48 goals in 46 games, not far off Milan Novy’s 10-year-old record 55 in 56. All of which made Ruzicka’s experience in Edmonton so difficult to take. In late 1989,…

Gulls’ Soviet winger getting scouts’ attention
Dmitri Kvartalnov was hoping he’d go far if he played out his option in the Soviet Union. But he didn’t know how far he would go. The forward has landed in the International League with the San Diego Gulls as a free agent, where he is making a lot of noise while waiting for a chance to play in the NHL. “My contract with (Soviet Elite League) Khimik expired, so I decided to come to America to test myself,” said Kvartalnov, who led the IHL with 13 goals. “I decided to do this last year. But with the (Soviet) coup, things were pretty bad when I was ready to leave. I was afraid for a while I couldn’t get here.” Kvartlanov is part prospect, part mystery for the Gulls. He speaks no English. Irene…

Goodenow on road again after CBA talks stall
You just knew once the season started, the issue about a new Collective Bargaining Agreement would somehow find its way to the back burner. It’s one thing to get huffy about a possible work stoppage in the middle of summer, but quite another once the skates have been laced on in early October. Really, it should come as no surprise the NHL and the NHL Players’ Association haven’t come up with a new CBA. In fact, it shouldn’t be surprising the two sides have not spoken face to face since the players left the last meetings in a huff one week before the start of the regular season. So, what’s going on, and how long can it be until one side or the other decides a deal has to be cut or the season…
