JOHNSON RECIEVES RARE THERAPY

PENGUINS Pittsburgh coach Bob Johnson, who underwent brain surgery at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh Aug. 30, received a relatively rare treatment Sept. 11. The treatment, known as “gamma knife,” uses beams of radioactive cobalt-60 to attack the target area. The procedure is not expected to change Johnson’s long-term prognosis, which Civic Arena Corp, president Paul Martha described as “not good.”…Four free agents— Mark Recchi, Kevin Stevens, Ron Francis and Scott Young—remained unsigned as the second week of training camp approached…Those players weren’t the only ones without contracts. Many staff members, including assistant coaches Rick Paterson and Rick Kehoe, were working under expired deals.
