GENERAL ALERT
First thought was to write this season preview with a disclaimer at the bottom. Something like… URGENT GENERALS’ WARNING: The return of superstar Eric Lindros to Oshawa of the Ontario League could be hazardous to the success of other teams. How hazardous? Even without Lindros, the Oshawa Generals will be a good, solid club with as many as 17 players returning from a 100-point season. With Lindros and his exponential ability back for another season, the only thing that may stop the Generals is a duffle bag of kryptonite. Lindros, for those who haven’t heard the word, has refused to report to the Quebec Nordiques, who made him the first pick overall in June’s NHL entry draft. RULING LEAVES PROBERT RELIEVED
You can’t expect to get a battleship for a canoe. With that blunt admonishment, NHL arbitrator Edward Houston rejected New Jersey’s demand of Bob Probert and ruled the Red Wings must send right wingers Dave Barr and Randy McKay as compensation for Detroit’s signing of free agent Woy Crowder. The loss of Probert, however remote, would have been tragic, Wings’ coach-general manager Bryan Murray said. “Obviously, it would have been devastating if we had lost Bob Probert,” he said. “Especially considering what has happened in his life and the support fans have given him here in Detroit. I suspected we made the right offer.
