YOUNG GUNS SHINE ABROAD

The Quebec Nordiques may have been on vacation since the end of March, but some of the organization’s key players kept playing—and they played very well. No fewer than six players were invited to represent their respective countries at the World Championships in Turku, Finland. Joe Sakic (Canada), Mats Sundin (Sweden), Craig Wolanin, Mike McNeil and Scott Gordon (U.S.) and Alexei Gusarov (USSR) all participated. Sundin, who led the tournament in scoring (7-5-12) and notched the winning goal in the deciding game (a 2-1 win over the Soviets), was named to the second all-star team at left wing. He was the main factor behind Sweden’s gold-medal performance. Sakic also led his team in scoring, capping off the tourney in second place in the overall scoring race with six goals and five assists. General manager Mike Smith insists he has not yet engaged in any list-making. And he may not have to do much if he waits a little longer, since a short list of headcoaching candidates for the Winnipeg Jets seems to be forming itself. Smith said he wants Bob Murdoch’s replacement hired well before draft week. But he added that he wouldn’t get down to serious coach hunting until after he returned from the World Championships in Finland. In the meantime, several potential candidates have come forward to say they’re interested in the vacant Winnipeg job. Among them is Chicago Blackhawk associate coach Darryl Sutter. “Somebody asked me if I’d really like to go to Winnipeg,” Sutter said. “And I said, ‘Sure, I’m from the West.’ It’s also a blue-collar hockey town and I thrive on…

GREYHOUNDS STUN LINDROS, GENERALS

What started out as a Sault Ste. Marie Greyhound welcoming party for their long lost star turned into a going away party, as in we hope you and your team are never back. Greyhound fans revelled at the opportunity to chide Eric Lindros upon the superstar’s first visit to Sault Ste. Marie. Lindros refused to play for the team that drafted him in 1989 and later was traded to the Oshawa Generals. The fans had their fun with Lindros—holding up placards and berating his every stride—and the Greyhounds had the last laugh winning Game 3 6-5 (overtime) May 2 and Game 4 8-5 May 3 in Sault Ste. Marie to take a 3-1 lead in their Ontario League best-of-seven championship series. But the Generals stormed back with a 4-2 win in Game 5…
