PEORIA DOMINATES AWARDS NIGHT
The biggest success story in the International League this season was the 18-game winning streak of the Peoria Rivermen. The Rivermen rode that to a 58-19-5 record and first place overall. So it’s not surprising that the finalists for The Hockey News Minor Pro Coach of the Year and THN Minor Pro Player of the Year include Rivermen. The winners are voted upon by THN editorial staff. Peoria coach Bob Plager is up against stiff competition from Jim Roberts, the coach of the American League’s Springfield Indians. Roberts won the Calder Cup last season and led the Indians to first place in the North Division this year. St. Louis Blues’ right winger Brett Hull may have supplanted Los Angeles Kings’ center Wayne Gretzky as the NHL’s highest-profile player this season, but the Great One still dominates the collectible industry’s highest-profile market—autographed sticks and jerseys. “Wayne definitely sells more overall, but Brett is a streaky seller,” says Ken Goldin, executive vice-president of The Scoreboard Inc., in Cherry Hill. N.J. “One day he’ll appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated and the next day we’ll have a big run on Hull merchandise. Gretzky? Well, Gretzky’s Gretzky.
