The date: March 6, 1988. The place: Calgary Flames’ general manager Cliff Fletcher’s office. The subject: Brett Hull…and his imminent departure from the Calgary Flames. The untold story: With a month to go before the Flames would win their first-ever President’s Trophy, Fletcher knew his team was good. But were they good enough? The consensus was no. They needed help. They needed a goalie to play behind Mike Vernon because Doug Dadswell was flunking his first NHL trial. And they needed a rugged defenseman to supplement their no-hit, all-finesse blueline. Since introducing overtime in 1983-84, only 35.7 per cent of NHL games (400 of 1,120) have been decided. Through Jan. 30, 67.3 per cent of OT games (64 of 95) ended in ties. Rod Brind’Amour and the St. Louis Blues led the NHL in OT appearances (eight). Five of the games ended in ties.…
