NEELY REACHES 50-GOAL MARK
BRUINS Cam Neely became the fifth Bruin to reach the 50-goal plateau, joining Phil Esposito, John Bucyk, Ken Hodge and Rick Middleton. Neely netted his 50th against the New York Islanders March 10 in a 3-3 tie. Mid- dleton was the last to accomplish the feat, when he had 51 during the 1981- 82 season…During Ray Bourque’s absence from the lineup with an abdo- minal injury, coach Mike Milbury appointed right winger Bob Gould as the team’s acting captain, instead of elevating Neely or Craig Janney, who serve as the team’s alternate cap- tains…The 10 goals the Bruins allowed at home in a 10-4 loss to the Buffalo Sabres March 8 were the most they’ve allowed at the Boston Garden since 1966, when the Chicago Black- hawks beat them 10-2…Rookie de-…
WEBSTER RETURNS TO THE BENCH
A side from getting plenty of rest to alleviate headaches and dizzy spells that stemmed from his inner-ear injury, coach Tom Webster spent countless hours studying videotapes of the Los Angeles Kings in action. It’s a miracle he didn’t have a relapse. “Watching the tapes verified a lot of the things that we can implement to correct our problems,” Webster said. “I found the tapes to be a very useful tool and we’re going to start using them a heck of a lot more. “I think we can use them more as a positive thing as we get closer to the playoffs. It would be a great advantage if we knew who we were going to play, but I’ve already asked (club video coordinator) Bob Borgen to use our satellite dish to tape…
INTENSE HOME-AND-HOME SERIES HAD IT ALL
Aweekend home-and-home series with the Chicago Blackhawks is intense for the St. Louis Blues at any time in the season. But on the second weekend of March, the series took on playoff-like importance with the two teams battling for first place in the Norris Division in a possible prelude to the Norris Division final. Not only that, but interesting subplots added to the drama on the ice. Goalie Vincent Riendeau was locked in a battle against former Blue Greg Millen, who taught Riendeau the ropes in his rookie season. Millen was a man possessed against the Blues, who traded him to the hapless Quebec Nordiques before Chicago acquired him for the stretch run. Rich Sutter, the kid brother of coach Brian Sutter, was making his first appearance in the rivalry since his acquisition with…
PLAYOFF BERTH AN UPHILL BATTLE
Ron Hextall, stricken by another groin injury March 8, limped off the ice and up the tunnel, perhaps taking the Philadelphia Flyers’ fleeting playoff hopes with him. Hextall’s woes were the low point in a bleak week for the Flyers, who fell six points out of the race for fourth place in the Patrick Division. In a span of five days(March6-10), the Flyers managed to: ◼ Drop their third straight 2-1 game to Boston this season on a goal by Bobby Gould with 41 seconds to play March 6. ◼ Lose Hextall at 14:48 of the first period in a 7-5 defeat to the New York Rangers March 8. ◼ Surrender a 3-2 lead in the last eight minutes and lose 4-3 to Washington March 10. It was their fifth setback against only one victory…
